Molly's Sketchbook: Felted Wool Star Ornaments

OR-Beauty-2

Decorating the Christmas tree is one of the most rewarding parts of the holidays. It can be so simply creative; stringing popcorn, cutting out paper dolls and snowflakes, or making elves out of pipe cleaners. In this spirit I made these star shaped ornaments out of the lovely, hand dyed felted wool by Mary Flanagan in the "wheat field" spectrum.  I was inspired by the rich, elemental colors to add some simple gold beading. The whole process, from cutting to stuffing to beading, takes about half an hour and is a very enjoyable way to spend a cold winter evening indoors. Happy tree trimming! --Molly

Whit's Knits: Pine Tree Sachets

option2.jpg

It's the bane of a knitter's existence that preparations for the holiday season can't start early enough. If, like me, you tend to get yourself into a knitting panic this time of year, or even if you're un-neurotic enough to maintain perspective, you may appreciate this quick gift idea.

These little pine tree sachets are speedy to knit but don't sacrifice the detailing that makes a knit gift special. Plus, they smell good. -Whitney

Luxurious Wool Blanket

blanket-beauty-5.jpg

Of all of my handmade projects, this luxurious, organic wool-melton blanket is definitely my favorite. I can't wait to bundle up with it during the winter! The rich tone of the organic wool-melton from O-Wool is complimented perfectly by the vibrant print from Liberty of London that I used to bind the edge.  Although I'm planning to keep this blanket for myself, it would also make a great gift. --Molly

Knit One, Purl One for the Road: Isabelle's Cross-Country Road Trip!

isabelle.map.jpg

Our friend and Purl Bee writer Isabelle is moving!  She'll be heading west from New York City to Seattle at the end of this month.  Along the way, Isabelle will need a car-friendly craft to work on when she's not driving or taking pictures out of the window.  To help her prepare, we have a question for you:

What is your favorite road trip craft?

What crafts translate best to the highways and byways? Have you been inspired by a quirky roadside attraction, a diner's blinking neon letters, a farmstand, or a monument?
