Whit's Knits: Woven Pearl Cowl

Rigid heddle weaving is a relatively new pursuit of ours here at the Purl Bee. With last spring's arrival of Schacht Spindle Co's tabletop Cricket Loom a whole world opened for us, a world of reeds and shuttles, warps and wefts. And as we explore this unfamiliar land, under every rock is a surprise even more beautiful than the last.

This project pairs fine yarns with a fairly open reed and a light touch. With the ocean and its salty breezes and sparkling tides on my mind, I chose for the weft Alchemy's Silken Straw. It embodies the rusticity of driftwood together with the elegance of a pearl. In contrast, Purl Soho's extraordinary Line Weight serves as the warp. A simple single ply of merino, it brings a cottony, matte softness to the project.

As exquisite as the Pearl Cowl looks, it's actually a breeze to make. Even if you have never woven before, you can plunge into the ocean and come up with a pearl! To get started, pick up Purl Soho's Materials for Pearl Cowl, which comes either with the 15-inch Cricket Loom or as a yarn-only kit.

And don't forget dear mom, whose day is less than a month away. Wouldn't she feel as beautiful as a mermaid in her own Pearl Cowl? Happy weaving! -Whitney

Corinne's Thread: Baby Sunbonnet

A few months ago, I designed a Sherpa-lined Winter Baby Bonnet to protect my infant daughter from the hibernal elements. Now as the seasons are changing, I realize that my winter baby is, well, still a baby. She is still in need of a hat to protect her delicate skin, now, from the bright sun of these warmer days!
But, I’ll admit, that when designing this Baby Sunbonnet, I had more than just practicality in mind. I’m a sucker for a baby in a classic bonnet! I love how the visor and chin ties create the perfect silhouette, allowing just her chubby cheeks to peak out. And, in Liberty of London prints, these hats are as timeless as they are sweet.
Because they don’t stay babies forever, our free Baby Sunbonnet pattern is available in sizes 0–24 months. So, no matter if your little one is big enough to toddle around this spring or is still just snuggled in your arms, she’ll look good doing it. Oh, and the sun will be out of her eyes too.  - Corinne

Laura's Loop: Trellis Scarf

There’s a mysterious promise in a bare trellis. What life has grown there before? What will grow there again? When will this bleak structure be transformed into a thriving plane of living color?

No matter how patiently I wait or how carefully I watch, this transformation comes so suddenly to me. There is always that one stunning day when a trellis is awakened by  opening buds, climbing vines and unfolding leaves, and you know that spring is here.

I made this Trellis Scarf with the hope of spring in mind… sun and flowers, cardigans and flats, levity and high spirits. I knit my scarf in the nearly weightless, astoundingly soft Zageo 6-Ply Cashmere by Jade Sapphire, and I adapted the stitch pattern from Barbara Walker’s book A Treasury of Knitting Patterns. She calls hers the Quilted Lattice Stitch. It’s a stitch with as much mystery as a naked trellis, appearing at first glance as though strands have been painstakingly woven into a finished knit piece. In fact, you create this beautiful quilted effect as you knit, and even more surprisingly, it’s super easy!

Just like that day when a quiet trellis springs into life, I bound off my stitches, admired my scarf’s light-catching beauty and wondered how on earth it happened so fast. Happy spring! -Laura
