Reversible Hat in Purl Soho's New Line Weight!

The arrival of Purl Soho's latest yarn, Line Weight, has inspired a fresh crop of beautiful knits, starting with the Purl Soho Reversible Hat! With its doubled up design, this hat takes full advantage of the soft ephemerality of Line Weight. Where one layer might not block a bitter chill, two are just right!

And two-hats-in-one means that the Reversible Hat changes as easily as your mood. Feeling Super Pink on Saturday and Heirloom White on Sunday? Or Dragonfly Blue in the morning and Peacock Blue at night? Flip it around and let your hat be the color of your spirit!

The Purl Soho Reversible Hat owes its elegance to the pared-down beauty of our new Line Weight. A single ply filament of 100% sumptuously soft merino wool, Line Weight is as simple as breath. It emits a subtle and beautiful glow that makes this hat truly special.

Choose your own two colors from our palette of classic naturals, suggestive blues and cheerful brights; or pick up a Yarn for Purl Soho Reversible Hat kit which includes two skeins of Line Weight in four beautiful colorways. Here's everything you need to know to get started...

Purl Soho Basic Hats For Everyone

I love to knit objects that are direct and unfussy and that I can accomplish no matter how many times I am distracted by my busy schedule. Designed to be worked up in our new Worsted Twist, a classic, plied yarn in 100% incredibly soft merino, this pattern is my new project of choice.

The Basic Hats for Everyone Pattern is definitely a desert-island choice, the kind of pattern that you turn to again and again, year after year. It covers four hat styles: rolled brim, garter stitch brim, ribbed brim and ear flap; and is sized to fit just about everyone: babies, uncles and grandmas!

Since these hats are, in fact, so basic, they're ripe for personal touches: pom poms, stripes, tassels, duplicate stitch designs, you name it. Super simple with the opportunity to customize? Think this season's perfect hand knit gift, and whip up a stack for everyone you know!

Here are all the pertinents... And happy knitting! -Joelle

New Kit: Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners

Many of us probably remember using grandma's scratchy scraps and old bent aluminum needles to knit our very first scarf, hat or blanket. We were proud enough of our accomplishment to try again, but the project itself is probably forgotten in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. It is our mission at Purl Soho to prevent the sad fate of moth-eaten first projects!

Novice or expert, we all appreciate the pleasure of wonderfully soft merino and warm wooden knitting needles; we all feel inspired by sophisticated, modern design; and we all want to wear or give the fruits of our labor with pride and joy. That's why Purl Soho has created a kit for first-time knitters that satisfies basic standards of beauty. Our new Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners kit equips the fledgling knitter with the supplies and knowledge (from winding to a ball to weaving in ends) to knit up a beautiful set of winter goodies!

Constructed out of simple garter stitch rectangles, these hat and hand warmers are classic, chic and totally easy-as-pie. And in Purl Soho's gorgeous Worsted Twist, they're incredibly soft and cozy too! Sized for women and men, each kit includes enough yarn to knit up a hat and a pair of hand warmers.

Each Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners kit includes...

  • 2 skeins of Purl Soho's Worsted Twist, which is enough to make a hat and set of hand warmers
  • A pair of birch wood US size 7 knitting needles (and a yarn needle for finishing)
  • A full-color how-to-knit instruction booklet, plus step-by-step patterns for an adult sized hat and pair of hand warmers

Choose from seven of our favorite colors (shown above, from the top): Toasted Charcoal, Dark Loam, Timeless Navy, Peacock Blue, Super Pink, Ballet Pink and Heirloom White. And get knitting!

New Treeline Striped Cardigan

Back in the very early days of the Purl Bee when we had about a dozen readers, a quarter of whom were our mothers, we posted a pattern for a sweater that we called the Treeline Striped Cardigan. It has endured to this day, enjoying an active life on Ravelry and garnering many comments here on the Bee. Unfortunately, a not insignificant number of those comments have been... egads, corrections!

This pattern is really from the Purl Bee dark ages, from before we had meetings or schedules or plans, let alone editors, but since then, we've... matured. And so it's become time to rescue an old favorite from the annals of glitchy patterns. We've corrected some numbers, added a larger size and a schematic, streamlined the wording, and definitely made the whole pattern much more user friendly.

And on the style front, this new version has a more decisive collar (thanks to Faye, our intrepid re-designer!) and an updated choice of yarns. The New Treeline Striped Cardigan alternates between Manos Del Uruguay's soft and cozy Maxima and Alchemy's charismatic Kozmos. The result is a textural adventure, full of fascination and beauty!

So get started on the newly simplified (and finally accurate!) pattern here, and if you're curious about the original, it's in deep storage right here!

Molly's Sketchbook: Trick or Treat Tote

Halloween tastes are ephemeral. One year your kid might insist on dressing up as a pink princess, while the next year nothing but a ghoulish ghost will do. It’s all part of the fun!  But while costumes change from year to year, one thing abides… candy!

To celebrate this most timeless aspect of Halloween we sewed up this sturdy little Trick Or Treat Tote. It’s easy to sew but so well engineered that it will serve its purpose year after year. Plus, with Orange Reflective Ribbon as the handle, your little goblin will be safer in the dark!

Small and simple, this project would be a great first bag. It’s so quick and satisfying that you may find yourself making them for all the little witches, warlocks, princesses, and ghosts you know! Everything you need to make one is in our Materials for Trick or Treat Tote Kit here! --Molly

ps- The beautiful candies in the photo above are from our favorite Swedish candy shop in New York, Socerbit!
