Molly's Sketchbook: Railroad Tote

I recently had a run of bad bag luck. I had a leather purse that I loved, but it was destroyed when a bottle of water opened up inside of it. Then the pretty tote bag I used as a replacement ripped, leaving me completely bagless, disheartened and uninspired. Then one day as I was sitting by my sewing machine, I caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye of some Railroad Denim fabric and eureka! With its sturdy weight and classic stripe, I knew I could make a winning bag that I’d be excited to carry!

A mere hour after my initial inspiration, I was tossing my wallet, lip gloss and keys into my beautiful new Railroad Tote, and my bag woes were a distant memory! I was so happy with how this tote turned out that I quickly made another using double-sided Black Washed 8 oz Denim. Both versions are hearty and strong and will stand up to washing and water bottle mishaps while still looking cute.

So if you’ve been having some bad bag luck yourself, or if you just need something fresh for summer, this project is for you. Make your own luck! -Molly

Molly's Sketchbook: Drawstring Shoe Bags

I’m only 35, but I’ve already compiled a to-do list for my retirement: I’m going to get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, bake bread and see the world. While I’m busy planning, my parents are actually living the retirement dream. My mom has opened a pottery studio and my dad has started making digital movies, but mostly, they travel, exploring all the wonderful places on their to-do list.

Before his retirement I could always make my dad a tie but these days he doesn’t have much use for formal stuff like that. So, for my dad’s new globetrotting lifestyle, I’m celebrating this Father’s Day with these super simple Drawstring Shoe Bags. With Robert Kaufman’s Double Cloth Cotton, an amazing two-sided fabric that gives a nice contrasting pop at the top of the drawstring channel, these bags are perfectly designed for quick crafting and tidy packing!

If, like me, you’ve got a travelling dad (or maybe a grad who’s off on a new adventure) these Drawstring Shoe Bags are just the ticket. With just a half a yard of Double Cloth Cotton, 2 yards of Fettucia Ribbon and some thread, you can sew up this thoughtful gift in a matter of minutes! Happy Father’s Day! -Molly

Give Your Favorite Purl Bee Project!

Maybe over the past year you've felt inspired by a project here on the Purl Bee, some little knit socks perhaps or an amazing quilt or a gorgeous cowl. And maybe now you'd like to pass that inspiration on to the crafty people you love. Sounds nice!

But what, you just give someone a pile of yarn and a web address? No! You give them a specially wrapped package of the major materials they will need, accompanied by a pretty card that pictures the finished project and gives instructions on where to go to get the free pattern! Sounds really nice!

We've chosen thirteen projects to get this special treatment, and we call them our Gift Kits! Nine of them are shown at the top of this post. They are...

Last Minute Handmade Gifts

Wouldn't it be lovely if there were a parallel crafting universe where time expanded into endless hours of exuberant creative activity? And wouldn't it be especially nice if this universe would reveal itself right about now, the moment our holiday gift list is crystallizing into a very long holiday gift list?

Alas, this is a Christmas miracle that is not bound to happen, and so, we consider Plan B: a whole lot of beautiful craft ideas that don't require a warp in the time-space continuum to complete! These project ideas range from fairly quick to extremely quick, and all of them are designed to give with pride and love. Some of our favorites are pictured above. They are...

Top row: Cozy Ear Flap Hat, Felt Flower Sachets, and Liberty Backpacks

Middle row: Braided Friendship Bracelets, Myrtle the Purl Turtle, and Color Tipped Scarf

Bottom Row: Neon Inside Out Bag, Heirloom Needle Case, and Snowflower Ornaments

And so that no one gets left out, there are more! Pictured above...

Top Row: Hostess Lap Duvets and Purl Soho Basic Hats for Everyone

Middle Row: Lovely Ribbed Cowl in Worsted Twist and Cashmere Cuff

Bottom Row: Knit Hedgehogs and Crocheted Ribbed Cowl

A little bit of everything for everyone... We can't offer you extra hours on the clock, but some well-timed inspiration is a close second! Happy crafting!

Molly's Sketchbook: Trick or Treat Tote

Halloween tastes are ephemeral. One year your kid might insist on dressing up as a pink princess, while the next year nothing but a ghoulish ghost will do. It’s all part of the fun!  But while costumes change from year to year, one thing abides… candy!

To celebrate this most timeless aspect of Halloween we sewed up this sturdy little Trick Or Treat Tote. It’s easy to sew but so well engineered that it will serve its purpose year after year. Plus, with Orange Reflective Ribbon as the handle, your little goblin will be safer in the dark!

Small and simple, this project would be a great first bag. It’s so quick and satisfying that you may find yourself making them for all the little witches, warlocks, princesses, and ghosts you know! Everything you need to make one is in our Materials for Trick or Treat Tote Kit here! --Molly

ps- The beautiful candies in the photo above are from our favorite Swedish candy shop in New York, Socerbit!
