Laura's Loop: The Purl Soho Friendly Fair Isle Sweater

Being partial to lore and a sucker for furry creatures with power, each year leading up to Groundhog’s Day I wonder what Punxsutawney Phil will predict. And each year, I am conflicted. Do I want the warmth and light that come with an early spring, or do I want six more weeks of winter cold so I can keep knitting with gloriously thick and wooly yarns?

Well, my ambivalence didn’t stop Phil from deciding. His decree: six more weeks of winter. But fear not, those who’ve grown weary of windburn, this Friendly Fair Isle Sweater is for you! Not only is it cuddly warm for an enduring winter season, but this punchy sweater also spreads the brightness and cheer of spring. And just in case Punxsutawney Phil’s meteorological skills aren’t quite on point this year, the Friendly Fair Isle is such a fun, quick knit, you’ll be weaving in your ends long before that early spring arrives!

I designed this no-fuss pullover with a classic cut and a raglan sleeve shoulder. And for speed and coziness, I used Purl Soho’s aptly named Super Soft Merino. The colors, I picked purposely to pop out like spring’s first flower buds peeking through the earth.

Since Phil is as unpredictable as the weather itself, I’m glad that this year I have my bases covered, a toasty sweater for winter, done well before spring… no matter when it comes!

New Colors of Super Soft Merino!

Our incredibly cozy Super Soft Merino was born as a collection of twelve beautiful colors, a balance of wildflower brights and classic neutrals. But if you adore color (and we do!), our original palette was just a beginning, which is why we're so excited to welcome nine gorgeous new colors to the Super Soft Merino family!

We've added a wide spectrum of beauties, inspired by nature and what we love: Dragonfly, a heart-racing blue, and Pale Stone, a cool, calm neutral; the soft and delicate Ballet Pink and the moody Storm Gray; the crisp breath of Ice Blue and the gentle sigh of Sea Salt; plus a trio of deep, earthy tones: Terra Green, Otter Brown, and Dark Loam.

More colors means more fun! Nothing makes us happier than shuffling around skeins of yarn until we hit upon a special combination that strikes a resonant chord. And one of our favorite riffs is the Super Easy Crib Blanket, a garter stitch rectangle made up of a series of seven colors in a simple progression. With the right notes, it sings the perfect tune!

Our original Super Easy Crib Blanket is a sweet confection whose palette we call Macaroon. We're so into this blanket's plush warmth and quick 2 3/4-stitches-to-the-inch, that we're knitting up five more! You can knit right along with us, just grab your favorite Super Soft Merino Super Easy Crib Blanket kit and cast on!

One of our favorites is sure to be the Cameo blanket. Its quiet colors, shown above, evoke a vintage mood of hand-tatted lace and soft leather gloves. These colors, from the top, are Toasted Charcoal, Storm Gray, Oyster Gray, Pale Stone, Sea Salt, Heirloom White and Ballet Pink.

Or choose one of our other palettes, shown clockwise from the top left: Pennant, Atmosphere, Bandana and Firefly. Each one plays to its own rhythm. Synchopated, lyrical or metered, pick the one that sings to you right here! And to view our new collection of Super Soft Merino just click here!

Fluffy Brioche Baby Blanket

Even though babies are so huggable, squeezable and delicious, we do have to put them down every now and then. That's when a Fluffy Brioche Baby Blanket comes in handy!

Wonderfully squishy and decadently soft, it is just right for a little playtime on the floor. And when it's all over, scoop up the whole cozy bundle... baby, blanket and all...  and get back to oohing and aahing!

Fluffy Brioche is one of our very favorite stitches. With its deep waffle texture and lofty thickness, it is just right for handsome hand knits. Plus, its four rows of patterning make for knitting that's interesting enough for a dull plane ride, but not so interesting that you miss the inflight rom com!

To show off the pretty complexity of Fluffy Brioche, we chose Cascade's stitch-defining Superwash 128. So soft and cuddly, Superwash 128 is a quick chunky weight, and as the name says, its totally machine washable. Plus, this yarn packs a ton of quality into an affordable price. Yay!

Pixie Dust Lap Blanket in Cool White!

Two years ago our Pixie Dust Lap Blanket ignited the imaginations of our readers with its fanciful large scale and whimsical twinkle. Knitters everywhere discovered the wonders of humongous needles capable of stitching up a show-stopping blanket in just a few hours!

Our original Pixie Dust Lap Blanket was knit up in a gorgeous daffodil yellow. Now this season we're exploring the arctic side of Knit Collage's Pixie Dust yarn with its cool white Snowflake color. This blanket is as fun, loopy and sparkly as its progenitor but with the elegance of a new fallen snow!

And here's an idea! Try doubling up Knit Collage's Sister. Same size needles, same pattern, same textural adventure, a Sister Lap Blanket is a beautifully affordable 100% wool alternative. Sister is now available in six lovely new colors, and you'll only need five skeins (you could even get away with four if you don't mind losing a few inches!). Here's a swatch:

Whit's Knits: Big Pink Pig

I know that in person pigs can be... well, a bit much. But in theory, pigs are just amusing. Their pot bellies and stubby snouts, their floppy ears and rosy hue, their lollygagging in the mud and snorting in the dirt, it's all totally lovable!

That's why designing this Big Pink Pig was so much fun. The third in my collection of my giant gumdrop animals, this one is maybe my favorite! I love the cool mystery of the Big Snowy Owl and the sweet innocence of the Big Cuddly Bunny, but this guy has it all. He's goofy and mischievous with a deep well of knowingness.

Knit up in Blue Sky's extra cuddly Bulky, the Big Pink Pig comes together in no time, all ready for hugs and snuggles! - Whitney
