Super Soft Merino Hand Warmers

I have peeked in the beautifully decorated shop windows and read what-feels-like hundreds of gift lists on the blogs, but no matter how short I am for time, I always do my darnedest to make a handmade gift first. As the clock ticks down though, stock in speedy projects definitely starts to rise!

These Hand Warmers were born out of a sobering look at the calendar. They truly knit up in a jiff. You can easily have several pairs finished before getting yourself in and out of the crowds and check out lines.

Recognize the yarn? Yes, it's Purl Soho's very own, very new, very exciting Super Soft Merino! Our beautifully lofty, luxuriously soft yarn comes in a palette of vibrant, charismatic colors, including this incredible Clementine Orange. As soon as I finish typing this, I am off to the races to make even more Super Soft Merino Hand Warmers in a whole rainbow of colors!

May your holiday season be filled with super soft, swift knits!

Molly's Sketchbook: Super Simple Super Soft Merino Baby Hat

Although I know how to knit, I tend to be all talk and no action. I’m great at buying yarn and casting on, but I’m also quite good at abandoning my projects before they’re done. But with everyone at the Purl Bee creating such amazing projects with our new Super Soft Merino (like these great hats and this awesome cowl), I was beginning to feel a little left out!

I knew I wanted to get in on the Super Soft Merino action, but I certainly didn’t want another partnerless mitten or half-finished sweater. With winter here and a new baby to keep warm, I decided I could probably manage a simple baby hat, as long as it was really easy. This pattern fits the bill!

The Super Simple Super Soft Merino Baby Hat is truly the easiest hat you will ever knit. The yarn’s chunky weight makes it quick, and its vivid range of colors makes it fun. It also happens to make the softest, fluffiest pom poms so I added one to the top! I had such a good time making mine that I ended up knitting two versions in as many nights. I was so proud of myself! The short version just covers the ears, while the tall version can be worn cuffed up and trim or unfolded and a little floppy. -Molly

Giant, Giant Granny Square Blanket

As a child we often travelled to my maternal grandparent's house for the holidays. I loved my Grandma Cordelia's old house, especially all of its treasure-filled nooks and crannies and all of the big beds deep with homemade blankets, quilts and coverlets.

Sleeping in the cozy attic bedroom with my teenaged cousins, Marci and Shelly, was always the highlight for me. I loved eavesdropping on them talking about Leif Garrett, Shawn Cassidy and other exciting grown up stuff.

This holiday, in memory of Cordelia's snug house, I worked up my Giant, Giant Granny Square Blanket that would be equally at home in her house as in a Williamsburg, Brooklyn artist's loft.  I used our new Super Soft Merino in each of its 12 colors for a super soft, super warm and super welcoming blanket, perfect for all of your holiday guests!

Here's to a house full of cozy guests! --Joelle

Garter Gaiter

We all know about late night holiday knitting and 42-inch scarves, stopped short to finish in time for giving! That's why every year we come up with the perfect quick knit, one that takes less than an afternoon to make but that you can give with pride.

This Garter Gaiter is perhaps our best inspiration so far! Knit out of Purl Soho's Super Soft Merino, it is delectably cozy and totally gorgeous, but even more to the point, it is a generous chunky weight that knits up here at a speedy 2 1/2 stitches to the inch!

Our Garter Gaiter features a beautiful play of color and a striking woven texture, all of which is really just the simple trick of single round stripes of garter stitch. We love it in crisp and festive candy cane colors, but can happily imagine any of our Super Soft Merino brights paired up with Heirloom White. Or for a dark and mysterious version, we love the idea of an interplay between Timeless Navy and Soft Black!

Lots of people left on your list? Check out more of our very quick, but very special, knitted gifts: our Bandana Cowl, Eleventh Hour Scarf, Fun Kid's Hat, Hats for Everyone, and Infant Mittens. A little something for everyone!

Two Purl Bee Classics, Now in Super Soft Merino

I just can't get enough of Purl Soho's new yarn, Super Soft Merino. I am over-the-moon excited about this beautiful chunky-weight yarn. And, I'm not alone… Since its arrival, we’ve all been knitting up our dreamiest ideas of winter coziness!
Joelle created the wonderfully seasonal Snowflake Scarf. Faye knit up the comfy and dramatic Fluted Cowl. Whitney brought us a gaggle of brilliantly bold color block and striped hats. And, Spoiler Alert: there's more to come!
Today we bring you two Purl Bee classics reconceived in Super Soft Merino for a fresh look and a wintertime feel! The Super Easy Crib Blanket borrows the classic striping from the baby-sized original, but at 2 3/4 stitches to the inch it requires fewer cast-on stitches and knits up to a bigger crib size. With voluminous stitches and a luxurious loft, this blanket is as soft and gentle as a cloud!
The Chevron Baby Blanket in Merino uses a single strand of Super Soft Merino, rather than the original’s two strands of cotton. The chevron stitch combined with the chunky weight yarn creates a dense and toasty baby blanket, perfect for floor or stroller time! We also changed up the striping, playing this time with whimsical irregularity.
If you haven’t knit with Super Soft Merino yet, you too may find that you can’t get enough. It’s truly a pleasure! --Laura
