Molly's Sketchbook: Modular Felt Coasters

Sometimes the most original and creative things are devised because of, and not despite, limitations. These constraints can be practical, like using old clothes or flour sacks to create beautiful quilts, but sometimes they are self-imposed. Think of Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl movement using only primary colors and simple shapes or Henri Matisse creating masterpieces using just scissors and colored paper.

These Modular Felt Coasters work within the limitations of a grid using only 2-inch squares and right triangles, but the process of creating these coasters is pure invention, much more like play than work! I love how each coaster evolves into its own little treasure, amazingly different from the others despite the similarity of their components.

In addition to being super fun to make, these Modular Felt Coasters are also super simple. Just cut and hand stitch! No machine required, so tuck a Felt Bundle into your carry on or weekend tote. And when you’re done, slip your new coasters under some tall, beachy drinks!

Corinne's Thread: New Year's Liberty Coasters

From eggnog to champagne and hot chocolate to hot toddies, ‘tis the season for sipping, slurping and toasting! And while there are always plenty of drinks to go around, it’s easy to find oneself short on places to put them, especially in a house filled with revelers.
Let these Liberty Coasters come to the rescue! With their mitered corners and festive Liberty of London prints, these coasters beautifully accompany even the fanciest holiday cocktail, while Dorr Mill’s Wool lining makes them sturdy, absorbent and most important, useful.
Purl Soho’s Materials for Liberty Coasters kit comes with enough fabric and interfacing to make all 12 of these cozy coasters. So whether they’re staying with you or going to the host of your next holiday party, there will be plenty to go around. Now that’s something I can raise a glass to! Cheers! - Corinne

Maybe over the past year you've felt inspired by a project here on the Purl Bee, some little knit socks perhaps or an amazing quilt or a gorgeous cowl. And maybe now you'd like to pass that inspiration on to the crafty people you love. Sounds nice!

Whit's Knits: Pin Loom Coasters

Imagine a group of extra-terrestrials gathered in a living room. They're poking and prodding a stack of coasters; and once condensation is explained to them and the subsequent ring on the table's surface is demonstrated, they all start bleeping and nodding their heads. Then they ask in their inter-galactic native tongue if it would be okay to take the coasters home with them... as proof of civilized life on Earth.

I doubt this set of Pin Loom Coasters will be leaving the galaxy anytime soon, but in the interim, I'm happy to have them around! They're fresh and summery, cute and simple, and very civilizing.

To make these pretty little squares I picked up Schacht Spindle Co's fabulous Zoom Loom. An updated version of a classic pin loom, the Zoom Loom is thoughtfully designed with smart details that make weaving a breeze. And now my head is swimming with ideas for all the things I'll make with my new skill: cute pockets, sachet pillows, gingham placemats, even blankets!

Laura's Loop: Nautical Needlepoint Coasters

Once again summer is here, and my family is planning its annual trip to Maine. We'll all cram into the old riverside home that was once my great grandfather's, a naval man who never did hide his love for the sea. The walls are still covered with regalia from his days on the water, and this maritime-themed hostess gift will definitely fit right in!
These Nautical Needlepoint Coasters go hand in hand with last year's Nautical Flag Napkins. Both take advantage of the amazing graphics and colors of the traditional nautical alphabet. To get the pop of really saturated reds, yellows, and blues I turned to the beautiful hand dyed colors of Koigu's Premium Merino. And for a table-friendly backing, I used Wollfilz Wool Felt, so soft and gentle!
This project is so portable it fits right into the small pocket of a tote bag, so I know I'll be whipping out my needle and yarn a couple more times this summer as I head off to visit friends and family, arriving with the perfect gift in hand! Make just a simple set of two coasters for the bedside or for fun, choose flags that spell something personal. These eight coasters together are the letters of my family's name, F-E-R-G-U-S-O-N!
I look forward to spelling my way through the rest of the letter flags, celebrating summer, the sea and the generosity of this season's hosts and hostesses! You'll find free templates for all 26 letters of the alphabet in my Nautical Needlepoint Coasters Project Journal, along with step-by-step instructions right here! Happy summer seas! -Laura
