Molly's Sketchbook: Gold and Silver Coasters

While many etiquette rules can seem a bit stuffy, there are a few that I try to abide by: Don’t start eating until everyone is served, always send a thank you note for a gift, and never show up empty handed to someone’s house for dinner or a party.  This last one is one of my paramount rules. I have often been late to dinner (which isn’t very good etiquette, I know!) because I couldn’t bear to show up without a bottle of wine or some cookies or flowers or something for the host.

Well, this holiday season I think I may have found the perfect gift for your holiday hosts and hostesses! These simple Gold and Silver Felt Coasters take about as much time to make as a trip to the wine store, but unlike a bottle of Syrah, they are imbued with handmade love. Just piece circles of 100% wool felt together into a chain, and voila, clever coasters that can be cut apart as needed!

I used our new New Years Felt Bundle , inspired by the elegant colors of a New Year's Eve party, and Sajou's Metallic Gold Thread, for a beautiful spark of light. Just one bundle of felt makes 24 coasters which you can divide into two sets of twelve or three sets of eight or however you like.

Molly's Sketchbook: Fall Leaves Coasters

Fall is my favorite season but that hasn't always been the case. Growing up in California, we didn't have much in the way of seasons, so I never understood the true glory of autumn until I moved to the East Coast. My first year in New York, I unwittingly took a weekend trip to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania right at the peak of fall foliage. I arrived at night and in the morning, woke up to a breathtaking riot of colors. As I wandered the town, I felt like I was in a kaleidoscope of yellows, oranges, red and pinks. I collected a bunch of my favorite leaves that day, thinking that they would keep their brilliant colors and was so sad when I realized they wouldn't.
Because the beautiful foliage is, in fact, so fleeting, I wanted to make some pretty leaves that would last all year long. I made these Fall Leaves Coasters with our brand new Fall Leaves Felt Bundle, a neutral taupe complemented by four bright autumnal colors. Like my previous Felt Coaster projects (which you can see here and here) these are easy (and addictive!) to make. And with Thanksgiving around the bend, a set of Fall Leaves Coasters will surely make an elegant addition to your festivities!

Molly's Sketchbook: Apple Coasters

When I was a kid I dreaded the day that I would start seeing commercials for school supplies and my mom would suggest we go buy a new backpack. I didn't even want to think about giving up my summer freedom. Sometimes, to add insult to injury, the first day of school would be on my birthday!

But these days, with first-days-of-school far behind me, I actually look forward to this time of year more than any other. I love the crisp weather, the foliage, my birthday, and I really love apples! Since apples are so quintessentially autumn and because they're so graphically appealing, I was inspired to celebrate this beautiful time of year with a super cute set of Apple Coasters. They'll add a barrel of autumnal cheer to any table!  Or start your kid's school year off right with the perfect teacher gift.

The Apple Coasters are close cousins to my summertime Citrus Coasters, which is to say that they are a total breeze to make, no fancy stitches or skills required. For this season's version we chose our favorite reds, greens, and yellows for our new 100% wool felt Apple Bundle. I just love the way they look all together, so fresh and bright!
