Whit's Knits: Crocheted Rib Cowl

I know that crocheters sometimes feel like the Cinderella of the needlecraft ball. While her adored stepsister, Belle Knit, dances the night away, Crochet-erella stays home sifting the internet for hard-to-find modern crochet patterns. That's why we love to use whatever magic we can muster in order to restore Crochet-erella to her rightful place as the glass-slipper-wearing fashion princess that she is!

This Rib Cowl is as lush and dramatic, cascading and gorgeous, as any knit counterpart. And in Purl Soho's Super Soft Merino, it's seriously cozy too. I plucked this beautiful, wear-with-everything Storm Gray from our newest palette of moody neutrals. Just right for a ball gown!

In a simple rib stitch that even very beginners can master, your Rib Cowl will definitely be done before midnight! And for more experienced crocheters who don't yet know how to make a Foundation Single Crochet (a foundation chain and the first row of single crochet all at once!), take this opportunity to learn with our new tutorial right here.

So, at last, Crochet-erella can get off the internet and join the party! I love a happy ending! -Whitney

Lovely Ribbed Cowl in Worsted Twist

Our Lovely Ribbed Cowl just got lovelier! Knit up in Purl Soho's Worsted Twist, this wonderfully uncomplicated cowl is the perfect stage for our newest yarn. Worsted Twist is a gorgeous 100% merino wool that knits up with crisp definition and classic simplicity. Plus, it's incredibly soft and cozy, just what you need in a cold autumn breeze!

With the same easy-as-pie pattern as the original, this is a great project for beginners; for people who are a little rusty after a summer of gardening instead of knitting; and even for die-hard knitters who love a mental break! To choose the color that's just right for you, browse our entire collection of Worsted Twist right here!

Laura's Loop: Ombre Cowl

It’s become more than evident to me that I cannot get enough of 1) neutrals and 2) cowls. First came the White Caps Cowl, a play of textures in soft creams; next the Shawl Collar Cowl, like a folded cloud; then the Salt + Pepper Cowl, a blend of crisp heathery fibers; and now, the latest addition to this mini-collection, the Ombre Cowl!

This Ombre Cowl explores the complexity of subtle shifts in shade and texture by combining three yarns of differing weights and fibers. Jade Sapphire’s sumptuous Zageo 6 Ply Cashmere starts the journey and grounds the bottom edge, while Madeline Tosh’s hand dyed Tosh Merino Light dominates the middle section, and floating along the top is Alchemy’s Haiku, a weightless silk and mohair blend.

In a gently rippling slip stitch pattern, these three fibers flow into one another with such harmony and grace that my love of neutrals (and cowls!) may be just beginning!

Make your own exploration into this fascinating world of fiber-play with our Yarn for Ombre Cowl kit. Choose from three beautiful colorways: Gray (pictured here), Navy and Natural. -Laura

Laura's Loop: Salt and Pepper Cowl

At Purl Soho we have a customer who, no matter the season, breezes into the store draped in the most meticulously combined textures layered to perfection and always, I mean always, in neutrals from head to toe. She makes one color feel like a rainbow with her play of hues and shades, textures and cuts. This woman, she can really wear gray.
This lovely fashionista was on my mind when I coupled this dynamic duo of yarns. One, Habu’s Viscose Sizing, a crisp, stark white ribbon wrapped in a delicate black thread. The other, Alchemy’s Haiku, a gorgeous hand-dyed silk and mohair blend with a downy glow.
As with our customer’s ensembles, the Salt and Pepper Cowl is an in-depth exploration of tactility and versatility. The ends are ribbed pulling both yarns, contrasting with the nearly weightless body of the cowl, which is knit in a smooth single row stripe. A slit at one end can be worn at the top, folded over like a collar. Or flip the cowl over and wear the slit draping over a shoulder for some extra length, drama and jaunty asymmetry.
Thank you, chic, beautiful customer of ours, for the inspiration. You’re one of so many who exhilarate our senses every day! --Laura

Garter Gaiter

We all know about late night holiday knitting and 42-inch scarves, stopped short to finish in time for giving! That's why every year we come up with the perfect quick knit, one that takes less than an afternoon to make but that you can give with pride.

This Garter Gaiter is perhaps our best inspiration so far! Knit out of Purl Soho's Super Soft Merino, it is delectably cozy and totally gorgeous, but even more to the point, it is a generous chunky weight that knits up here at a speedy 2 1/2 stitches to the inch!

Our Garter Gaiter features a beautiful play of color and a striking woven texture, all of which is really just the simple trick of single round stripes of garter stitch. We love it in crisp and festive candy cane colors, but can happily imagine any of our Super Soft Merino brights paired up with Heirloom White. Or for a dark and mysterious version, we love the idea of an interplay between Timeless Navy and Soft Black!

Lots of people left on your list? Check out more of our very quick, but very special, knitted gifts: our Bandana Cowl, Eleventh Hour Scarf, Fun Kid's Hat, Hats for Everyone, and Infant Mittens. A little something for everyone!
