Corinne’s Thread: Advent Calendar

Some of my best Christmas memories aren’t from the day itself but rather from the days and weeks leading up to it: the letters to Santa, the evenings spent trimming the tree, the cookie baking (and eating), and, of course, the daily ritual of the advent calendar.
Every morning in December my sister and I would clamor downstairs to the calendar, eager to mark one day closer to Santa’s arrival. The Christmas countdown was a real tradition in our house, made all the more meaningful by the calendar itself. Ours had been hand made by my grandmother, and it saw us through every December I can remember. Even as a kid I knew how special this was, and I loved admiring all the details of her handiwork.
Now that I have children of my own, I am excited to bring the same kind of magic to their Christmas season. I wanted our calendar to be fun, modern and long-lasting, but mostly, I knew that nothing short of hand-made would do!
This Advent Calendar fits the bill perfectly. Made with a colorful selection of 100% wool felt and embellished with a bevy of beautiful sequins and beads, it’s built to withstand the test of time (and small fingers), with just enough vintage whimsy to remind me of where it all began.  My girls are still too young to really appreciate the ritual yet, but I can see the spirit of Christmas Future, and it’s looking very bright!
To make your own calendar (and to start your very own family tradition) we’ve compiled everything you’ll need in our Advent Calendar Kit. It includes…
  • 100% wool felt in 12 colors
  • 100% cotton thread in 3 colors
  • Embroidery floss
  • Embroidery needle
  • Beading needle
  • Sequins in 5 colors and beads in 3 colors
  • Straight pins
  • Iron-on transfer pencil
  • Fabric marker
  • Stuffing for ornaments
  • Wood dowel for hanging
  • 12-Page, full-color instructional booklet
  • Cutting and transfer templates
And it all comes beautifully packaged in a sturdy tube, which makes it a great gift… even if it’s just to yourself! --Corinne

Molly's Sketchbook: Myrtle the Purl Turtle

At first glance it may not seem that a hard-shelled, scaly-skinned reptile would be all that likable, but there’s just something about turtles that sparks the imagination. Maybe it’s their uniquely shaped shells, like tiny traveling houses. Or perhaps it’s because of their wise-looking countenance and unhurried manner. Whatever the reason, these ectotherms have captured our fancy!

Our Myrtle the Purl Turtle is just as appealing as her real life counterpart, only much more huggable. Her big, cuddly size and soft Liberty of London shell make her a fun pillow-like companion, perfect for sleepovers and keeping the bed warm. And despite a real turtle’s sluggish reputation, this pattern is super quick to sew!

Myrtle’s shell is made with Liberty of London’s bright, beautiful Tana Lawn; her body is rustic Essex linen; and her underside is vibrant 100% wool felt. These lovely, sturdy materials ensure that your turtle will be around for just as long as a real one! Everything you need to make your own is available in our Materials for Myrtle the Purl Turtle kit right here! --Molly

Corinne's Thread: Felt Flower Sachets

The trees haven’t even bloomed yet, and my spring calendar is full: a trip to visit friends who just bought their first house in Madison, Wisconsin, two weddings here in New York, an open invitation to a friend’s backyard on the Jersey shore, and a Mother's Day brunch in May. These are all good things, but as the invites pile up, so does the daunting task of finding just the right gift for house warmings, weddings, hostesses, and dear mom!

I, of course, turned to the Purl Bee archives for some gift giving inspiration. I’ve always loved the Felt Flower Pillows that Molly made a few years ago but am wary of making something so big for someone else’s home. That’s when it hit me, why not shrink the scale and turn big pillows into pretty little sachets, easy to make and to give!
Luckily, not only do these sachets appeal to my more practical nature, they are also a blast to make. The beautiful, vibrant colors of the new Mariposa Felt Bundle made picking color combinations so fun, and I am completely willing to admit that I spent far too long arranging and rearranging the petals before I came up with my final choices. But, with colors like these, how could you not?!
And since each Felt Bundle makes 16 sachets, there are enough here to say good luck, congratulations, thank you, and even happy Mother's Day!

Molly's Sketchbook: Bobby Pin Butterflies

Around this time of the year I start to crave color like I crave chocolate, potato chips, or coffee! It’s supposed to be spring, but outside, it is relentlessly cold, cloudy and gray. So as an offering to the vernal gods, I created these Bobby Pin Butterflies, wearable bursts of color meant to usher in sunnier times!

No creature better manifests pure beauty and color than a butterfly. In fact, a group of butterflies is called a “kaleidoscope”! To bring this particular kaleidoscope to life I used our new Mariposa Felt Bundle. It is everything that spring should be, pretty, cheerful and luminous!

Designed as an adorable hair accessory, these sweeties are also terrific for Easter decorating. Perched around the edge of an Easter basket, on the tips of a forsythia branch, or amidst a beautiful centerpiece, these fluttering little butterflies are a very happy symbol of the season!

And they couldn’t be easier to make. Each butterfly comes together with just one stitch, while black bobby pins effortlessly transform into surprisingly perfect butterfly bodies and antennae!

Molly's Sketchbook: Anemone Magnets

I feel like the anemone flower is having a moment. Everywhere I go I am seeing their whimsical petals and moody color palette. Anemones seem to fall somewhere in between a poppy and rose which, as far as I’m concerned, is a good place to be! So for Valentine’s Day this year I looked past the classic rose to this more unexpected flower and designed these super pretty Anemone Magnets.

From inky navy blue to vibrant neon pink, our gorgeous new Anemone Felt Bundle evokes the drama and beauty of its eponymous flower. We love Wollfilz’s Felt for special little projects like this because its colors are spectacular and because its hem-free nature is perfect for easy hand sewing.

These Anemone Magnets are so quick and fun to make that before you know it, you’ll have a whole bouquet! Give them this Valentine’s Day as sweet tokens of love and appreciation. Or help an older child who is learning to sew whip up a set for the whole class! -Molly
