Whit's Knits: New Log Cabin Washcloths

Knitting doesn't offer too many shortcuts. Maybe that's exactly why we love knitting so much, but every now and then, even diehard knitters need a little instant gratification. Enter the washcloth!

I love to give (and use!) hand knit washcloths. They are an unexpected luxury that's not on anyone's list but would be if they only knew the pleasure. And I love the satisfaction of a small square that's open to a whole world of possibilites. And finally, I love how very fast they are to knit!

These New Log Cabin Washcloths are the second set I've made using the same design principle. The first set tinkered with juxtapositions of bright color, while this set has its eye on texture. Blue Sky's organic Skinny Cotton plays the straight guy to Habu's uber-playful Natural Cover Cotton. The result is a little bit mid-century modern and a little bit now; a little bit city and a little bit country; a little bit methodical and a little bit wonky!

For a great summer travel project, choose one of our Yarn for Log Cabin Washcloth kits in Red, Navy, Shell or Khaki. Your first washcloth will be done before you return your seat back to its full, upright position!  -Whitney

Whit's Knits: Super Easy Lap Blanket

The Super Easy Baby Blanket has become something of an institution here at the Purl Bee. We love how accessible this pattern is to knitters of all levels, and even more, we love the opportunity to play with gorgeous palettes of color!

I knit up the original Super Easy Baby Blanket four and a half years ago in Alchemy's gorgeous Temple superwash merino. Later, Faye knit her own interpretation with Koigu's Kersti Merino Crepe. With its ocean and sunshine colors and a squishier feel, her New Super Easy Baby Blanket was such a smash that we made it into a super easy kit! And most recently, we used our own Super Soft Merino for a bigger, even cushier version that we call the Super Easy Crib Blanket.

And now here is our biggest version yet, the Super Easy Lap Blanket! Knit out of Manos Del Uruguay's amazing Maxima, this one is cozy soft, decadently toasty and looks absolutely stunning in kettle-dyed, hand-spun 100% extrafine merino wool.

The Super Easy Lap Blanket is perfect for drafty winter evenings on the couch and chilly mornings at the kitchen table. And in colors that meander from rich Mahogany, through the land of pinks and blues, to finish in deep Dark Chocolate, this version has a sophisticated drama that will light up any room!

Garter Gaiter

We all know about late night holiday knitting and 42-inch scarves, stopped short to finish in time for giving! That's why every year we come up with the perfect quick knit, one that takes less than an afternoon to make but that you can give with pride.

This Garter Gaiter is perhaps our best inspiration so far! Knit out of Purl Soho's Super Soft Merino, it is delectably cozy and totally gorgeous, but even more to the point, it is a generous chunky weight that knits up here at a speedy 2 1/2 stitches to the inch!

Our Garter Gaiter features a beautiful play of color and a striking woven texture, all of which is really just the simple trick of single round stripes of garter stitch. We love it in crisp and festive candy cane colors, but can happily imagine any of our Super Soft Merino brights paired up with Heirloom White. Or for a dark and mysterious version, we love the idea of an interplay between Timeless Navy and Soft Black!

Lots of people left on your list? Check out more of our very quick, but very special, knitted gifts: our Bandana Cowl, Eleventh Hour Scarf, Fun Kid's Hat, Hats for Everyone, and Infant Mittens. A little something for everyone!

Two Purl Bee Classics, Now in Super Soft Merino

I just can't get enough of Purl Soho's new yarn, Super Soft Merino. I am over-the-moon excited about this beautiful chunky-weight yarn. And, I'm not alone… Since its arrival, we’ve all been knitting up our dreamiest ideas of winter coziness!
Joelle created the wonderfully seasonal Snowflake Scarf. Faye knit up the comfy and dramatic Fluted Cowl. Whitney brought us a gaggle of brilliantly bold color block and striped hats. And, Spoiler Alert: there's more to come!
Today we bring you two Purl Bee classics reconceived in Super Soft Merino for a fresh look and a wintertime feel! The Super Easy Crib Blanket borrows the classic striping from the baby-sized original, but at 2 3/4 stitches to the inch it requires fewer cast-on stitches and knits up to a bigger crib size. With voluminous stitches and a luxurious loft, this blanket is as soft and gentle as a cloud!
The Chevron Baby Blanket in Merino uses a single strand of Super Soft Merino, rather than the original’s two strands of cotton. The chevron stitch combined with the chunky weight yarn creates a dense and toasty baby blanket, perfect for floor or stroller time! We also changed up the striping, playing this time with whimsical irregularity.
If you haven’t knit with Super Soft Merino yet, you too may find that you can’t get enough. It’s truly a pleasure! --Laura

New! Purl Soho's Learn To Knit Kit!

If you're a knitter, then you surely remember your first journey into the world of knitting. Inevitably, it started with a scarf and was accompanied by a wonderful tremor of excitement. A whole new passion was in store for you, a life of creativity and fascination, of joy and beauty.

At Purl Soho, our mission is to share this passion, and so our new Learn To Knit kit is specially designed to spark a creative fire in the hearts of new knitters everywhere! Our goal was to create an experience for new knitters that would be as satisfying and enchanted as were our own first forays into knits and purls.

We believe that beautiful materials are at least half the pleasure of knitting, that just because it's your first scarf doesn't mean you can't appreciate tactile delight and sumptuous beauty. That's why we equipped the Learn To Knit kit with two gorgeous skeins of our new Super Soft Merino, enough to knit up an equally gorgeous, totally cuddly, absolutely wonderful scarf!

Also tucked inside our kit is an indispensable first-time-knitter companion, our Learn To Knit instruction booklet! Filled with dozens of full-color, close-up photographs and explicit explanations, this guide will hold your hand through every step of the process, from winding a ball to casting on, knitting, purling, combining the two, adding a ball, binding off, weaving in ends and blocking. This may sound like gibberish to you now, but by the time we're done with you, you'll be completely fluent!

In fact, the Learn To Knit booklet is so chock-full of practical and valuable information that, in the end, you will have the knowledge and confidence to choose one of three scarf patterns to knit up your very own scarf. Garter, seed or rib? You'll know exactly what we're talking about!

Packed inside a sturdy, use-it-again tube is absolutely everything you'll need to actually knit a scarf! Each Learn to Knit Kit includes...

  • 2 skeins of Purl Soho's Super Soft Merino, enough to make one scarf. Choose from our whole palette of twelve lovely colors!
  • A pair of solid birch knitting needles, size US #13. Made in the USA.
  • A yarn needle for finishing.
  • An everything-you-need-to-know Instruction Booklet which includes patterns for three scarves.

And with the holidays around the corner, now is a very good time to learn how to knit so you can give a scarf imbued with the love and devotion of hand crafting! Or, equally meaningful, share your own passion for knitting with someone who doesn't yet know what she or he is missing. Now, that's a gift that will truly last a lifetime!

If you'd like to order a Learn To Knit Kit just click right here. And happy knitting!
