Molly's Sketchbook: Super Simple Super Soft Merino Baby Hat

Although I know how to knit, I tend to be all talk and no action. I’m great at buying yarn and casting on, but I’m also quite good at abandoning my projects before they’re done. But with everyone at the Purl Bee creating such amazing projects with our new Super Soft Merino (like these great hats and this awesome cowl), I was beginning to feel a little left out!

I knew I wanted to get in on the Super Soft Merino action, but I certainly didn’t want another partnerless mitten or half-finished sweater. With winter here and a new baby to keep warm, I decided I could probably manage a simple baby hat, as long as it was really easy. This pattern fits the bill!

The Super Simple Super Soft Merino Baby Hat is truly the easiest hat you will ever knit. The yarn’s chunky weight makes it quick, and its vivid range of colors makes it fun. It also happens to make the softest, fluffiest pom poms so I added one to the top! I had such a good time making mine that I ended up knitting two versions in as many nights. I was so proud of myself! The short version just covers the ears, while the tall version can be worn cuffed up and trim or unfolded and a little floppy. -Molly

Whit's Knits: Super Soft Merino Hats for Everyone!

I love the boisterous song that the colors of Super Soft Merino sing together, like the refrain that a group of merry hikers might belt out through a snow-covered forest!

And what better way to have some fun with color than to knit up a whole gaggle of hats? Looking at them all together, I imagine a lollipop shop where all the surfaces are white and all the lollipops bob around with their candy bright heads!

On Christmas morning, when all the wrapping paper is off these hats, I love that my whole family will be left with the same happy thoughts as I'm having now. What good cheer and warm feelings to bring to a holiday gathering!

Of course, an added bonus is that nothing's faster to knit than a hat, and one that knits up at three stitches to the inch is, well, even faster! Purl Soho's new Super Soft Merino is the perfect yarn to get the job done. Decadently soft, prettily spun, and wonderfully toasty, it is one heck of a beautiful hat yarn! -Whitney

Laura's Loop: Petite Popover

They were skeptical at first, but I think I’ve finally convinced my colleagues of the magnificence of the dickie! I mean, seriously, what could be better?
No worrying about cramming layers into layers, just pop it on over a shirt or sweater, under a coat or jacket. Snug as a bug, I say! Your baby or tot's core will be toasty warm and his or her arms, flexible and free. Plus, this one has a cozy hood, eliminating one more thing bound to fall behind at the park or sadly slip out of a pocket.
Can you feel my soapbox enthusiasm? I do not exaggerate when I write that for a solid year of meetings I have espoused the renaissance of the dickie. And let’s be honest, the majority of my co-workers'  doubt focussed on the name. “Dickie” is not nearly as cute or endearing as Popover! (Thank you for the re-brand, Whitney!)
So here is my attempt to resurrect the dignity of the side-less vest. Knit in classic Worsted, rich, organic merino from Swans Island, and another in the super soft, plush and elegant 8-Ply Cashmere from Jade Sapphire. One needle. One little hood seam. Two classic stitch patterns. From both a knitter’s and a parent's point of view, it’s a no-brainer!
So, what do y’all think?!?! Can we bring back the dickie? Say yes!

Whit's Knits: Thank You Hats

Every now and then someone enters our lives to help us through a tough spot, to somehow give what we need when we need it. These hats are for those people! They express gratitude in the way that only something made with our own hands can. They say "Thank you. No, really... thank you."

The need for such a hat is upon me. I broke my foot last year, and since then, my physical therapist has become, not only the person I spend more time with than any other non-family member, but also my coach and cheerleader. And now that our time together is nearly up, words just don't seem enough to tell her how grateful I am. I hope a hand knit hat will take her through the winter knowing how appreciated she really is!

The Simple Rib Hat is sized for most women and some men and really only takes a few hours to whip up. Just one skein of Blue Sky's beautiful Worsted Hand Dyes makes an incredibly soft and cozy hat!

And the Big Rib Hat, which is sized for most men and some women, is made out of Swans Island's spectacular Worsted. One hundred percent organic merino wool, this yarn is special for its gorgeous all natural dyes and unbelievable softness.

Maybe for you it's a teacher who cared enough to recognize something special in your child; or a neighbor who watched your dog when you suddenly had to leave town for a week; or a nurse who brought laughter and hope to your parent through a difficult hospital stay. Whoever it is, a quick knit goes a long way!

Let us know who you want to thank; we'd love to know!

Laura's Loop: A New Simple Pleasures Hat

It was almost four years ago when Whitney wowed us with her Simple Pleasures Hat. There are a few projects from the Bee that every single person at the shop just HAS to make. This is one of them! As soon as fall breezes in, we reach for our Simple Pleasures Hats, grinning as we all arrive to work in our matching knitwear. It's just too good a pattern to pass up, a dream to knit and even better to wear!

For this season, we've knit up a fresh, cloud-like version in elegant creams and super soft cashmere. We started with two strands of Jade Sapphire's beautifully soft and cozy 2 Ply Cashmere. After a few inches of ribbing, we added a strand of Alchemy's mohair and silk Haiku. This gorgeous combination of hand dyed fibers makes for complex plays of pigment and texture with a subtle luster, a downy halo, and a spectacular depth of color!

Like every autumn, I am sure there will be a lot of new Simple Pleasures Hats around the shop. Come surprise us with yours!
