Easy Pullover for Babies, Toddlers and Kids

The Easy Baby Cardigan from Joelle's More Last-Minute Kitted Gifts has become a Purl Soho classic... but it wasn't the original! Before she knit up that worsted weight cardigan, Joelle first conceived of a lightweight, all-season pullover. At 7 stitches to the inch, it wasn't exactly a "last minute knitted gift" and so it evolved; but Joelle never forgot the adorable prototype she had decided to shelve!

The inspiration behind both sweaters was always Joelle's intrigue with an over-the-top construction. Starting at the bottom back, knitting up and over the shoulders and sleeves, then down the front, this sweater is a one-piece engineering wonder! The Easy Baby Pullover may not be as quick as its cardigan cousin, but it's just as easy! And just as beautiful, with the gorgeous hand dyed subtlety of Koigu Premium Merino. Wonderfully soft, machine washable and as gorgeous as yarn comes, KPM is one of our all time favorites!

This timeless design is filled with design details that make it cozy for tots and easy for parents: a roomy neck opening for quick on and off, cuffs designed for rolling, and a loose, casual style for busy little bodies!  A new classic? We think so!

P.S. Curious about the cute hat too? It's our Little Fair Isle Hat and you can find out all about it right here!

Whit's Knits: Little Fair Isle Hat

Before learning how to knit, I loved and admired Fair Isle knitting but always assumed that it was reserved for an elite few gold medal knitters, the kind who apprenticed on their grandmothers' knees before they could even walk. Now, of course, I know that I should never have been so intimidated!

What looks so intricate is actually just a matter of knitting first with one color and then with a second, switching between the two as the pattern slowly emerges and blossoms into a fascinating and surprising design. Fair Isle is really one of the most fun things you can do in knitting!

If you've never done it, this Little Fair Isle Hat is a great place to start, small and manageable. And if you're a veteran of the craft, then you'll appreciate the speed of this sweet knit. Either way, some baby, toddler or child somewhere is going to be sporting a very pretty hat, made by you!

It's true that an intrinsic economic difficulty of Fair Isle knitting is the necessity for small amounts of many colors. I was so happy to sidestep this problem with Koigu's little 11 yard skeins of KPM Needlepoint Yarn. They're wonderfully soft, beautiful and affordable. And with over 150 hand dyed colors to choose from, the fancy knitting may end up being the easiest part!

P.S. We also have a pattern for the adorable sweater! Just visit our Easy Baby Pullover project journal right here!

Laura's Loop: Paint Pail Mittens

There was always an art project when I was growing up. Between Mom and Aunt Julie, I was constantly drawing and building, cutting and pasting, tie dying and finger painting. Recently I was reminded of those special times as I watched Aunt Julie and my 3-year-old niece deeply engrossed in paint mayhem. Little Gwyneth’s fingers were all shades of the rainbow. Having eschewed paintbrushes for fingertips, she swirled the paints around with reckless abandon, wondering when someone might stop her!

The Paint Pail Mittens are a nod to those carefree days of dipping fingers into buckets of bright paint. Knit primarily in the sumptuous Swan’s Island Worsted organic merino and topped off with Madeline Tosh’s Tosh Merino in the electric Edison Bulb color, you and your favorite crafting buddy will make quite a duo!

This simple pattern includes six sizes, from 2 years to Adult Men’s Large. One skein of the Swan’s Island Worsted makes one kids and one adult pair. And one skein of the Tosh Merino will be ample contrast color for at least three pairs of any size. You will also need a set of US #5 and US #6 double pointed needles and a Paint Pail Mitten Pattern, which you can purchase right here!

Happy crafting and happy winter! --Laura

Molly's Sketchbook: Glow in the Dark Spider Web Treat Bag

Growing up, I was a big fan of Halloween. I always had a great time going to the store with my mom to pick out the fabric for my costume; and I loved getting dressed up and bobbing for apples at the school party. But what I loved most of all was trick-or-treating, and not just because of the candy. It was  wild and thrilling to be out and about roaming the streets after dark, on a school night, getting free candy. To this day, when I think of Halloween I envision the foggy little streets of my hometown, Albany, California, dotted with roaming bands of witches, cats, and robots.

The one thing missing from the Halloweens of my youth was a festive candy bag (I just used a brown grocery sack or a pillow case.) But if I could go back in time, I know my 7 year old self would have loved this super cool Glow in the Dark Spider Web Treat Bag. It's just the right mix of whimsical and spooky. And it's a snap to make! All you need is one hank of Glow in the Dark DMC embroidery floss, one 18-inch square of Wool Felt, and one yard of grosgrain ribbon, and you're set to spin your own web!

Happy Halloween!-- Molly

Whit's Knits: Big Snowy Owl

There's something about owls. Is it their baby-wide eyes? Their mysterious nighttime habits? Or their totemic gumdrop shape? I'm not sure, but owls somehow manage to be simultaneously enigmatic and totally lovable.

This one is heavy on the lovable! With a big, pudgy belly and a cozy soft alpaca-blend yarn, the Big Snowy Owl is one heck of a hugger. At a foot and a half tall and a yard around, he's just right for little arms to squeeze and for young imaginations to love. Although, you're never too old for an unconditionally amiable friend!

Making the Big Snowy Owl was probably the most fun knitting I've done all year. From easy stitch patterns to simple shaping, there's never a dull moment! Plus I love just being around the downy softness of Blue Sky Bulky, big wonderful stitch after big wonderful stitch!
