Last Minute Handmade Gifts

Wouldn't it be lovely if there were a parallel crafting universe where time expanded into endless hours of exuberant creative activity? And wouldn't it be especially nice if this universe would reveal itself right about now, the moment our holiday gift list is crystallizing into a very long holiday gift list?

Alas, this is a Christmas miracle that is not bound to happen, and so, we consider Plan B: a whole lot of beautiful craft ideas that don't require a warp in the time-space continuum to complete! These project ideas range from fairly quick to extremely quick, and all of them are designed to give with pride and love. Some of our favorites are pictured above. They are...

Top row: Cozy Ear Flap Hat, Felt Flower Sachets, and Liberty Backpacks

Middle row: Braided Friendship Bracelets, Myrtle the Purl Turtle, and Color Tipped Scarf

Bottom Row: Neon Inside Out Bag, Heirloom Needle Case, and Snowflower Ornaments

And so that no one gets left out, there are more! Pictured above...

Top Row: Hostess Lap Duvets and Purl Soho Basic Hats for Everyone

Middle Row: Lovely Ribbed Cowl in Worsted Twist and Cashmere Cuff

Bottom Row: Knit Hedgehogs and Crocheted Ribbed Cowl

A little bit of everything for everyone... We can't offer you extra hours on the clock, but some well-timed inspiration is a close second! Happy crafting!

Molly's Sketchbook: Running Stitch Napkins

I love Thanksgiving traditions! Every year I need to turn on the parade and the dog show for background ambience as I make my requisite three pies (pumpkin, apple, and a chocolate truffle tart). And every year I need to dress up in something semi fancy and take a walk in the crisp fall air on the nearly empty streets of Brooklyn. I need to have turkey, even though I dont really like it except in sandwiches the next day. Oh, and those sandwiches have to be made on white bread with cranberry sauce, iceberg lettuce, and mayonnaise. And finally, I need to make a set of napkins for the Purl Bee!

This years set is close to my heart because it uses three of the most beautiful Liberty of London Tana Lawn Seasonal prints that Ive ever seen. Together they make such a handsome autumnal mix! I chose to keep the sewing simple with a straightforward set of muslin-lined napkins, although at the last minute I couldnt resist hand sewing the top stitching just to make each napkin extra special. You could certainly do a quick machine-sewn running stitch if the timers about to pop on the turkey!

With or without the hand stitching, these Thanksgiving Napkins will dress up the table nicely,  really adding to the richness of your Thanksgiving traditions. If youd like to see all of my previous Thanksgiving napkin projects you can browse our archive here! And Happy Turkey Day! --Molly

Molly's Sketchbook: Myrtle the Purl Turtle

At first glance it may not seem that a hard-shelled, scaly-skinned reptile would be all that likable, but there’s just something about turtles that sparks the imagination. Maybe it’s their uniquely shaped shells, like tiny traveling houses. Or perhaps it’s because of their wise-looking countenance and unhurried manner. Whatever the reason, these ectotherms have captured our fancy!

Our Myrtle the Purl Turtle is just as appealing as her real life counterpart, only much more huggable. Her big, cuddly size and soft Liberty of London shell make her a fun pillow-like companion, perfect for sleepovers and keeping the bed warm. And despite a real turtle’s sluggish reputation, this pattern is super quick to sew!

Myrtle’s shell is made with Liberty of London’s bright, beautiful Tana Lawn; her body is rustic Essex linen; and her underside is vibrant 100% wool felt. These lovely, sturdy materials ensure that your turtle will be around for just as long as a real one! Everything you need to make your own is available in our Materials for Myrtle the Purl Turtle kit right here! --Molly

Molly's Sketchbook: Liberty Nap Mat

My daughter recently moved from the infant room of her daycare into the toddler room. There were a lot of changes for little Lupe that day: new teachers, new snacks, and a new naptime routine. Instead of being put into her very own crib whenever she seemed tired, she was now expected to sleep on a mat on the floor at the same time as all the other squirmy toddlers in the class. I was worried that Lupe wouldn’t adjust well to communal sleeping, but she seemed to like it and is now a champion napper!

To keep up her new routine when we're on the go or traveling I made this pretty Nap Mat with a blanket and a pillow built right in. It’s made from just two pieces of fabric: Railroad Denim for durability and strength and Liberty of London's Tana Lawn for softness and beauty. And for a really cozy snooze the Nap Mat is stuffed with lofty wool batting. The whole thing sews together in a jiffy!

Bring your Liberty Nap Mat to an afternoon at grandma's; set up a special nap corner in your own house; and when a child's not sleeping in it, the Nap Mat is as a lovely place for teddy bears and stuffed bunnies to rest!Everything you need to make your own is available in our Materials for Liberty Nap Mat kit right here! -Molly
