Molly's Sketchbook: Father's Day Tie - Updated!

Two years ago for Father's Day I designed a tie using one of our favorite fabrics, Liberty of London Tana Lawn. The combination of a classic neck tie and the gorgeous Liberty prints was an instant hit.  We heard from so many sewists who made amazing gifts for their dads, husbands, brothers and friends. This year I decided to rework and update the pattern to make it more streamlined and easy to follow.  During this process I couldn't resist making three more ties out of some of our wonderful new Tana Lawn prints.  They are, clockwise from the top, the subtle, summery Gray Princess Emerald, the fun and Springy Green Lola Weisselberg, and the bold, modern Brown Yellow Pepper.

If you'd like to make one for your dad, grad, or yourself (!) please check out our updated Father's Day Tie project journal right here. --Molly

Molly's Sketchbook: Liberty of London,Tana Lawn PJ's

Recently we got in a bunch of new Liberty of London Tana Lawn prints and they're simply breathtaking. Liberty's Tana Lawn is known for its exquisitely detailed printing, its incredible color and its silky smoothness that makes it drape like a dream. The print I've used here is called Mitsi

Molly's Sketchbook: Carefree Clothes for Girls Sundress

I am constantly inspired by the amazing craft books that come form Japan. We carry many of these books online and in our stores and even though I can't read Japanese I still find them endlessly fascinating. I know that it's possible to sew the patterns from these books using just their well drawn instructions but I've never had the courage to try. (Mari however did a great tutorial on how to figure out Japanese sewing patterns that you can see by clicking here.)

Handmade Baby Elephants from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts & Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts!

Elephants are wonderful creatures. They are intelligent, have great memories, and live in fascinating structured social groups. Perhaps because they are such symbols of peace and wisdom they have often been the subject of children’s literature. I can’t think of any other animal that has as spawned as many memorable characters as the mighty elephant. There’s Dumbo, Ella, Horton, Elmer and of course, Babar just to name a few.  There is something so compelling about them, from their powerful trunks to their cute little tails.

Happily, The Purl Bee is experiencing a baby boom and we wanted to make some baby gifts for the new arrivals that would be soft, cuddly, and spark their imagination. We can’t think of a better creature than the elephant to do this. These two stuffed elephants, one knitted and one sewn, have so much personality and will make great companions for the little ones in your life. Both come from books written by our very own Joelle Hoverson and both are quick and easy to make!
