Laura's Loop: Button Candy Hat

As we bustle around in this brisk month of merriment, seasonal sweets seem to be everywhere you go. I must confess, even as an adult, when I’m offered a tray or bowl or basket of goodies, I reach with a sly grin, full of anticipation, overwhelmed by choice. That moment of choosing, it’s nearly as sweet as the sweet treat itself!

Now this may be a youngest sibling thing, but for me, being offered a moment all to myself to choose what I want, that brief moment of picking, it’s golden. It’s no wonder, my affinity for Button Candy. Feet of scrolling white paper covered with colored candy dots, and most importantly, all mine. Mine to be picked and plucked at my pace, creating patterns from my selections. So many options, so much joy.

Inspired by the festivity of those candy colors, the wonderment of their arrangement and the joy they bring, I knit up this Button Candy Hat. The bright colors of Koigu’s hand-dyed merino Needlepoint Yarns are perfect for the fair isle bobbles, and Purl Soho’s incredibly soft Line Weight merino makes a wonderfully downy backdrop. Get them all with Purl Soho’s Yarn for Button Candy Hat kit!

I hope this season is filled with joy and merriment and many moments of selecting sweet treats. Happy Holidays! –Laura

Whit's Knits: Crochet Candy Ornaments

This year the Purl Bee is celebrating Christmas with the sweetest inspiration we know: candy! From rolling ribbon candy to twisty taffy, this whole week will bring ornaments and projects all inspired by the confections of the season. Yum!

Kicking off the week, our Crochet Candy Ornaments evoke the spirit of classic lollipops and peppermint swirls. To make them, I crocheted simple circles with Purl Soho's soft and gentle Line Weight and then used Koigu Premium Merino Needlepoint Yarn to embroider colorful rings. I also backed each ornament with a circle of ecru-colored Wool Felt to give it structure and year-after-year permanence. Get all the yarn and wool felt you'll need to whip up two dozen of these sweeties with Purl Soho's Materials for Crochet Candy Ornaments kit!

I love the idea of these ornaments decorating a tree or a branch but can also imagine them strung on a garland or dangling from a wrapped gift. They seem to radiate a small burst of joy and goodness, which makes them perfect for the season!

And here's a sneak peak at some of what the upcoming week on the Bee will bring: a confectionery of ornaments! Stay tuned for all the who's-whose, how-to's and what's-whats!

Have a very sweet and merry Christmas! -Whitney

Laura's Loop: Long Lovely Mittens

As the temperatures drop and the layers build up, wintertime apparel slowly claims our womanly physiques, sometimes making it a struggle to feel like a lady at all. A dash of red lipstick can do wonders, but the best way to fight off that down-coat-yeti look? Beautiful accessories! A soft cabled hat, a brilliantly colored wrap, or my answer this season, these Long Lovely Mittens.

Reaching just shy of the elbow, the mere gesture required to slip on these mittens suggests a certain elegance. Purl Soho’s newest merino yarn, Line Weight, is perfect for this pared-down design. The stockinette fabric is incredibly soft to the touch, and it emits a gentle glow that is just right for winter’s harsh reality.

Pair these Long Lovely Mittens with anything. Even if they get buried under all those layers, having them on will definitely add an extra swing to your step. -Laura

PS: These require just one skein of Line Weight, a perfect holiday gift knit!

Whit's Knits: Woven Plaid Scarf

Not infrequently, my son, husband and I leave our apartment, get out onto the sidewalk, take a look at each other and realize that we're all wearing plaid. True, my son and husband bear the last name Ogilvie, but what's my excuse?

I just love plaid, always have, always will. Plaid does have lovely associations with outdoor ruggedness and indoor woodfires, but more compelling for me is the pure logic of its structure. I could endlessly travel the paths and intersections of plaid's colored highways, taking pit stops to ponder the neighborhood where pink crosses gray and to follow the hair-thin lines that interrupt the landscape.

And although knitting and crochet have their methods of creating plaid, nothing replaces a woven plaid for simplicity and sheer beauty. Plaid is, in fact, the very reason I ever became a student of Schacht Spindle Co's Cricket Loom. It's indeed a breathtaking endeavor to watch as stripes morph into plaid, like a smile breaking across a face!

Purl Soho's Line Weight yarn gives this plaid project a very special feeling. Line Weight glows with a smooth, downy softness, creating a fabric that is more gentle and elegant than you might expect from the same pattern that brings you hunting coats and horse blankets!

Inspired to equip yourself with a mobile weaving studio? Pick up the whole ensemble: a 15-inch Cricket Loom, a 12-dent reed and seven skeins of Line Weight, with our Materials for Woven Plaid Scarf kit. Or if you're already a seasoned weaver and just need the yarn, click right here. I hope you have as much fun making yours as I did mine! -Whitney

Whit's Knits: Line Weight Hats for Newborns

Because it feels like a new baby enters my circle of friends and family about every two minutes, it's pretty hectic trying to welcome each one with a hand knit gift. And although I'm short on time and long on babies, I would hate to give new parents the impression that I whipped some yarn into something vaguely wearable and oh-by-the-way-congratulations-about-the-baby. In other words, I'm in serious need of a quick, but exquisite baby gift.

Nothing's quicker than a hat, but how to convey that this is no ordinary hat? Easy, choose an extraordinary yarn! Purl Soho's Line Weight is instantly special with its simple purity and understated beauty. A single ply, soft and cozy merino, it is as light as a feather and as soft as a kitten. Plus, the almost 500 yard skeins mean that I'm all set for the next round of babies!

Pick up both skeins of Line Weight in these timeless and delicate grays with our Yarn for Line Weight Hats for Newborns kit. Or browse our whole collection of Line Weight to pick the color scheme that's right for the babies in your life! -Whitney
