Purl Soho Basic Hats For Everyone

I love to knit objects that are direct and unfussy and that I can accomplish no matter how many times I am distracted by my busy schedule. Designed to be worked up in our new Worsted Twist, a classic, plied yarn in 100% incredibly soft merino, this pattern is my new project of choice.

The Basic Hats for Everyone Pattern is definitely a desert-island choice, the kind of pattern that you turn to again and again, year after year. It covers four hat styles: rolled brim, garter stitch brim, ribbed brim and ear flap; and is sized to fit just about everyone: babies, uncles and grandmas!

Since these hats are, in fact, so basic, they're ripe for personal touches: pom poms, stripes, tassels, duplicate stitch designs, you name it. Super simple with the opportunity to customize? Think this season's perfect hand knit gift, and whip up a stack for everyone you know!

Here are all the pertinents... And happy knitting! -Joelle

New Kit: Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners

Many of us probably remember using grandma's scratchy scraps and old bent aluminum needles to knit our very first scarf, hat or blanket. We were proud enough of our accomplishment to try again, but the project itself is probably forgotten in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. It is our mission at Purl Soho to prevent the sad fate of moth-eaten first projects!

Novice or expert, we all appreciate the pleasure of wonderfully soft merino and warm wooden knitting needles; we all feel inspired by sophisticated, modern design; and we all want to wear or give the fruits of our labor with pride and joy. That's why Purl Soho has created a kit for first-time knitters that satisfies basic standards of beauty. Our new Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners kit equips the fledgling knitter with the supplies and knowledge (from winding to a ball to weaving in ends) to knit up a beautiful set of winter goodies!

Constructed out of simple garter stitch rectangles, these hat and hand warmers are classic, chic and totally easy-as-pie. And in Purl Soho's gorgeous Worsted Twist, they're incredibly soft and cozy too! Sized for women and men, each kit includes enough yarn to knit up a hat and a pair of hand warmers.

Each Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners kit includes...

  • 2 skeins of Purl Soho's Worsted Twist, which is enough to make a hat and set of hand warmers
  • A pair of birch wood US size 7 knitting needles (and a yarn needle for finishing)
  • A full-color how-to-knit instruction booklet, plus step-by-step patterns for an adult sized hat and pair of hand warmers

Choose from seven of our favorite colors (shown above, from the top): Toasted Charcoal, Dark Loam, Timeless Navy, Peacock Blue, Super Pink, Ballet Pink and Heirloom White. And get knitting!

Laura's Loop: The Purl Soho Cardigan Coat + Vest

Whether stolen, borrowed or inherited, sporting a garment that once belonged to someone special brings a certain comfort or strength to your day. Maybe it’s because of the smell or the attached sentimentality. Whatever the reason, it’s why kids love to sleep in their dad’s shirts; why women wear the same oversized man’s sweater day in and day out; and it’s why I cherish my grandmother’s old clothes.

The Purl Soho Cardigan Coat + Vest was undeniably inspired by this phenomenon. If my grandmother had had this sweater, I would most definitely and most shamelessly have stolen it! This piece is meant to be worn a lot and by many, even by those who aren’t its original owner. Its timeless design makes it an insta-hand-me-down.

This simple sweater is knit in Purl Soho’s new Worsted Twist, a yarn-lover’s merino,  classic and hearty, but with an elegant loft and touch. Designing this Coat, I channeled my admiration for Elizabeth Zimmermann to create a modular vibe and a thoughtful construction. I strategically combined stockinette and garter stitches to add a graphic and modern edge to a seemingly vintage cut.

You can pick up The Purl Soho Cardigan Coat + Vest Pattern right here! I hope you enjoy knitting this sweater as much as I did, daydreaming all the while of who will wear it after me. I have a feeling it won’t be in my grips for long! -Laura

Corinne's Thread: Smocked Dress and Shirt Kits

I have sewn tons of garments for my daughter, from teeny tiny rompers to delicate bonnets, but there’s one thing I had yet to tackle: a classic smocked dress. I have always wanted to try my hand at smocking but was too intimidated by all the tiny pleats and miniscule stitches to actually give it a go. Turns out, my fussing was for nothing; hand smocking is totally easy!

With just a few well-placed stitches I was able to check this off my sewing to-do list without a single new gray hair. And I am so glad I did! The intricate puckers and pleats of the honeycomb smocking add such fascinating and beautiful detail to this otherwise simple garment.

If, like me, you’re a bit of a smock-o-phobe, our new Smocked Dress and Shirt Pattern is the perfect place to start. It includes a Smocked Dress pattern for sizes 12 months to 6 years and a Smocked Shirt pattern for sizes 12 months to 10 years. Full-color photographs and instructions walk you through every step, from cutting the fabric and marking the smocking grid right down to the very last hem. You can use this Pattern with any lightweight cotton fabric you love!

Or if you adore classic gingham as much as I do, pick up our Smocked Dress and Shirt Kit! It includes...

Choose from four beautiful colorways, each one packaged in a sturdy Purl Soho box. All you need to add is the sewing machine, bias tape maker and the special love and care that go into every handmade garment! - Corinne

PS. Already have fabric? You can find the pattern on it's own right here, too!

Laura's Loop: Paint Pail Mittens

There was always an art project when I was growing up. Between Mom and Aunt Julie, I was constantly drawing and building, cutting and pasting, tie dying and finger painting. Recently I was reminded of those special times as I watched Aunt Julie and my 3-year-old niece deeply engrossed in paint mayhem. Little Gwyneth’s fingers were all shades of the rainbow. Having eschewed paintbrushes for fingertips, she swirled the paints around with reckless abandon, wondering when someone might stop her!

The Paint Pail Mittens are a nod to those carefree days of dipping fingers into buckets of bright paint. Knit primarily in the sumptuous Swan’s Island Worsted organic merino and topped off with Madeline Tosh’s Tosh Merino in the electric Edison Bulb color, you and your favorite crafting buddy will make quite a duo!

This simple pattern includes six sizes, from 2 years to Adult Men’s Large. One skein of the Swan’s Island Worsted makes one kids and one adult pair. And one skein of the Tosh Merino will be ample contrast color for at least three pairs of any size. You will also need a set of US #5 and US #6 double pointed needles and a Paint Pail Mitten Pattern, which you can purchase right here!

Happy crafting and happy winter! --Laura
