Laura's Loop: The Boyfriend Hat

In Levis, flannel button downs, canvas sneakers, and grandpa cardigans, a friend of mine and I used to laugh that rather than dressing for the boys we wished we were dating, we dressed like the boys we wished we were dating. And the funniest part was that despite our different taste in men, somehow our fantasies of their wardrobes were identical. Some things are for the everyman and, as it turns out, for the everywoman too.

I designed the Boyfriend Hat with the versatility of any timeless article of clothing. Man or woman, wear it slouchy or cuffed. Pull it down taut or let it hover above the ears. Cuff it twice for a Wes Anderson style watchman cap.

Knit up with two different colored strands of Purl Soho’s Line Weight merino, the effect is gently marled and toasty warm. In a tight 1 x 1 rib, this hat is also exceptionally elastic and durable, hugging the head and feeling decadently soft, even through winter’s wear and tear.

The Boyfriend Hat is the hat you wish he had so you could steal it from him. Or is it the hat you have that he wants to steal from you? I don’t know… Just make two. -Laura

Laura's Loop: Structured Alpaca Cowl in Purl Soho's New Alpaca Pure!

Purl Soho's newest yarn, Alpaca Pure, is wonderfully suited for contrasts and warmth! This elegantly plied yarn is as articulate in a textured rib as it is in smooth stockinette stitch. And in 100% of the softest and coziest alpaca fiber we've ever felt, this worsted weight yarn creates the very fabric you dream about in the bitterest depths of winter.

Our Structured Alpaca Cowl was inspired by the versatility of Alpaca Pure, its subtle sheen and sumptuous loft. A twisted rib pattern stands tall to protect the back of the neck, while a stockinette front gently drapes below the chin, framing the wearer's face and fortifying against the cold. Quick and simple to knit, gorgeous to wear, it's the ultimate last minute gift!

Our Alpaca Pure collection comes in our classic palette of neutrals and blues with pops of our favorite wildflower brights. Enjoy this quick-knitting beauty, so perfect for holiday crafting and giving! -Laura

Laura's Loop: Brioche Scarf

Meeting a new yarn is as layered and complex as meeting a new person. First you size up the yarn, inspecting how it looks in the skein; then you shake hands, observing how the fiber behaves in your fingers; and finally, you talk, discovering how this new yarn feels as a finished fabric and new friend.

After making the acquaintance of Purl Soho’s newest yarn, Line Weight, I must say that it could not be more aptly named. The richness of the merino and its creamy, smooth spin look and feel like Line Weight was drawn by a freshly sharpened number 2 pencil. Line Weight lures your eyes along its path, celebrating each stitch, from simple stockinette fabric to lavish lace work. Recognizing that this confident simplicity serves to highlight one's labors, I let Line Weight work for me.

Pairing high-definition Line Weight with big-bang-for-your-buck Brioche Stitch, this simple pattern is transformed into vivid ridges and a remarkable fabric. You can probably tell that I’m smitten. Who wouldn’t want to work in a yarn that reflects your hands' work, elevates your efforts, and is incredibly soft and cozy to boot?

Laura's Loop: Brioche Vest

Rooted in my days of wearing school uniforms, my longtime adoration of vests is based in their practicality. Well, at least that was the case before this one… for a vest in brioche stitch is no longer just for logistical layering.

Brioche stitch has as decadent a feel as its namesake has flavor. Deep ridges and valleys give it a rich textural appeal, while wide, airy ribbing provides an unexpected loftiness. Plus, it begs for shaping details; even minimal decreases (like I did here) add a beautiful curve up and around an otherwise linear fabric.

Knit in Purl Soho’s sumptuous Worsted Twist, these soft ribs will hug your core toasty warm all fall, winter and into spring. There will be few times you won’t find an excuse to wear your Brioche Vest!

Even with its multi-seasonal layer-ability, I think the luxurious feel of cuddling into this generously turtlenecked vest trumps issues of practicality?!? Maybe I’m wrong? Maybe I should keep testing it out to be sure… -Laura

Whit's Knits: Crocheted Rib Cowl

I know that crocheters sometimes feel like the Cinderella of the needlecraft ball. While her adored stepsister, Belle Knit, dances the night away, Crochet-erella stays home sifting the internet for hard-to-find modern crochet patterns. That's why we love to use whatever magic we can muster in order to restore Crochet-erella to her rightful place as the glass-slipper-wearing fashion princess that she is!

This Rib Cowl is as lush and dramatic, cascading and gorgeous, as any knit counterpart. And in Purl Soho's Super Soft Merino, it's seriously cozy too. I plucked this beautiful, wear-with-everything Storm Gray from our newest palette of moody neutrals. Just right for a ball gown!

In a simple rib stitch that even very beginners can master, your Rib Cowl will definitely be done before midnight! And for more experienced crocheters who don't yet know how to make a Foundation Single Crochet (a foundation chain and the first row of single crochet all at once!), take this opportunity to learn with our new tutorial right here.

So, at last, Crochet-erella can get off the internet and join the party! I love a happy ending! -Whitney
