Molly's Sketchbook: Oxford Burp Cloths

As all of you more experienced moms know, it’s not the adorable dresses or precious quilts or hand knit sweaters that you actually need. No, the real must-haves are more mundane. Things like diapers, onesies, and burp cloths. This last item came as a complete surprise to me. Turns out, this whole baby thing is a bit messier than I had imagined!

Having stocked up on more linen bloomers than burp cloths, I found myself seriously empty handed! Luckily, just around the time I made this realization, Purl Soho received a new collection of beautiful Robert Kaufman Oxford fabric. Backed with absorbent cotton flannel, the Oxford is perfectly soft, sturdy, and pretty, just what I needed for a set of burp cloths that would be as special as all of those dresses hanging in Lupe’s closet!

Our Oxford Fat Quarter Bundle contains the entire line of subtle stripes and soft solids. With a reference to classic menswear and in a palette of petal soft colors, I love that all together these fabrics look sophisticated and baby at the same time. Plus, each bundle contains enough fabric to make 20 Oxford Burp Cloths! I plan to keep my favorites and then have the rest on hand for quick baby shower gifts. Maybe I can save a few new moms from the mess I found myself in!

New! 4 Seasons of Embroidery from Purl Soho + Egg Press

We are so excited to announce our latest labor of love, the 4 Seasons of Embroidery Kit from Purl Soho and Egg Press! To create it we combined a little bit of life's most meaningful pleasures: old friends, natural beauty, and hand crafting. The result is the embroidery kit of our dreams!

The 4 Seasons of Embroidery project started as a friendship between Purl Soho and Portland, Oregon-based design company, Egg Press. We have long admired each other, sharing a devotion to traditional crafting and modern design and an agreement that nature's gifts are our finest inspiration! Egg Press also brought to this project a mastery of the time-honored crafts of letter pressing and typeface design.

But it is our mutual respect for the handmade that most urgently brought this bi-coastal partnership into being. And embroidery, with its stark evidence of the hand's involvement, was a natural place for us to start. We love also that embroidery has the inherent feeling of having lived a hundred years already, whether it was in fact passed on from generation to generation or was just finished yesterday. We took great pleasure in bringing to this timeless feeling the aesthetics of modern design, a look that is pared-down, playful and very fresh!

The 4 Seasons of Embroidery centers around one of nature's most compelling images, the tree. Its powerful message of life and renewal, of family history and natural bounty, is so universal that people of all ages and places can appreciate its dispatch of hope!

Each kit includes four transfer designs that depict a year in the life of a proud tree, from bubbly spring and verdant summer to resplendent autumn and serene winter.

To magnify that message, we also created a simple woodgrain design. We love the raw, organic look of the woodgrain but designed it to give a modern, graphic expression to your more abstract thoughts!

Woodgrain proved to be a wonderful vehicle for our letter and number designs. With two transfer sets of alphabets (lower and upper cases) and a set of zero-to-nine numbers, each kit comes equipped with an amazing way to personalize your projects with initials, wedding or birth dates and messages of love!

Each 4 Seasons of Embroidery Kit comes with absolutely everything you'll need to stitch up your own embroidered treasures:

  • Reusable transfers for 4 Seasonal Trees, woodgrain alphabets and number, and woodgrain pattern
  • 1/2 yard cotton/linen fabric
  • 15 skeins of colorful embroidery thread
  • Embroidery needles
  • A 4-inch wooden embroidery hoop (large display hoop not included)
  • A color photo how-to-embroider booklet
  • Hook and loop tape for plying thread

And because we love beautiful packaging and hate senseless garbage, all of this is contained in a sturdy tube with a lovely letter-pressed top created by Egg Press. Once you've used what's inside, use the tube for paint brushes or wooden spoons, buttons or knick knacks, dried flowers or chopsticks! Plus, such considered packaging makes this kit a very special gift!

Already equipped? Choose instead, a 4 Seasons of Embroidery Packet, which includes:

  • Reusable transfers for 4 Seasonal Trees, woodgrain alphabets and number, and woodgrain pattern
  • And a color photo how-to-embroider booklet

For stunning pillows, wall art and linens, the 4 Seasons of Embroidery Kit is our idea of crafting bliss! To get started on your own heirloom projects, please click here for the 4 Seasons of Embroidery Kit and here for the Packet. And happy stitching!

Molly's Sketchbook: Picnic Roll

From Griffith Park to Prospect Park, it’s picnic season! What could be better than packing up a basket of tasty treats for some dining al fresco? Growing up, we used to throw some sandwiches in a bag and head for the hills of Berkeley’s Tilden Park. We'd watch the hawks soaring overhead and take ride after ride on the carousel before settling down for our picnic. Now in my adopted hometown of New York City, I've discovered the fun of cosmopolitan picnicking, from evening concerts in Central Park to outdoor movies at Bryant Park!

I usually just bring along a sheet or tablecloth, but this year I decided to design something special for the task! To add some summertime cheer, I chose festive, citrus-bright colors, and to keep things simple, I geared the design toward practical convenience, easy to make, carry, use and wash!

I made my Picnic Roll out of hefty Organic Cotton Duck and crisp Essex cotton-linen. Essex comes in tons of bright saturated colors that scream summer and that are beautifully grounded by Cotton Duck's rugged neutrals. The whole thing rolls up into a neat little package thanks to orange Cotton Webbing and our sturdy new D-rings. Best of all, it’s so quick to sew that if you got started now, you could be watching fireworks on it by July 4th! --Molly

Molly's Sketchbook: Newborn Kimono Shirt

My mother is now retired, but for most of my life she was the head designer and co-owner of a children’s wear company called Sweet Potatoes. Growing up I would occasionally find some of the very first clothes she made for me carefully tucked away in a trunk. I always marveled at how tiny the newborn sleep sacks, jackets, and dresses were. I couldn’t believe I had ever been that small!

Inspired by one such sleep sack, edged in bias tape and made for me thirty-three years ago, I designed this Newborn Kimono Shirt for my own little one who, as I write this, is due very soon (but who may have been born by the time you read it!). I realize that newborn clothing doesn’t fit fast-growing babies for very long, but I love the idea of showing her just how little she was!

For the body of the Kimono, I used natural Essex Linen which has a beautiful, timeless heirloom quality. And for the binding, I used Nani Iro's adorable new Bias Tape. I love its subtle but playful polka dots, especially because I think they work equally well for a baby boy or girl. The Kimono's construction is very simple but with attention to important details, so it doesn’t take long to sew, but it will last a lifetime! --Molly

P.S. In case you all are wondering, YES, Molly had her baby!  Guadalupe Raquel was born on June 17, 2012.  Both Mom and Baby are doing great!  Congratulations Molly!  xoxo - Purl Bee
