Laura's Loop: The Purl Soho Cardigan Coat + Vest

Whether stolen, borrowed or inherited, sporting a garment that once belonged to someone special brings a certain comfort or strength to your day. Maybe it’s because of the smell or the attached sentimentality. Whatever the reason, it’s why kids love to sleep in their dad’s shirts; why women wear the same oversized man’s sweater day in and day out; and it’s why I cherish my grandmother’s old clothes.

The Purl Soho Cardigan Coat + Vest was undeniably inspired by this phenomenon. If my grandmother had had this sweater, I would most definitely and most shamelessly have stolen it! This piece is meant to be worn a lot and by many, even by those who aren’t its original owner. Its timeless design makes it an insta-hand-me-down.

This simple sweater is knit in Purl Soho’s new Worsted Twist, a yarn-lover’s merino,  classic and hearty, but with an elegant loft and touch. Designing this Coat, I channeled my admiration for Elizabeth Zimmermann to create a modular vibe and a thoughtful construction. I strategically combined stockinette and garter stitches to add a graphic and modern edge to a seemingly vintage cut.

You can pick up The Purl Soho Cardigan Coat + Vest Pattern right here! I hope you enjoy knitting this sweater as much as I did, daydreaming all the while of who will wear it after me. I have a feeling it won’t be in my grips for long! -Laura

New! Purl Soho's Worsted Twist

Our budding collection of Purl Soho yarn is growing... Introducing our latest inspiration, Worsted Twist! Worsted Twist pays homage to a classic 2 ply farm yarn with its straightforward earthiness and deep sophistication. Spun in one hundred percent of the softest merino wool you can imagine, our newest yarn is so fresh and simple that all of our fall ideas start here!

Its smooth finish makes Worsted Twist a fabulous choice for interesting stitch patterns, and its amazing softness makes it just right for everything that you wear close: cowls, scarves, hats, mittens, sweaters, and blankets. Choose from a palette of moody blues and evocative neutrals, animated by pops of our favorite brights.

Worsted Twist's timeless look and toasty touch reminded us immediately of our favorite sweater from college. Remember it? The one that kept you cozy at bonfires and football games, on autumn walks and winter adventures? The Purl Soho Pullover is that sweater... only better: classic, comfy and totally beautiful!

With ingenious shoulder shaping and simple design details, The Purl Soho Pullover is a super fun and quick knit. Joelle actually whipped up the prototype in one trans-Atlantic flight! It is knit in one easy piece and is sized for everyone with sizes Child's 2 (4, 6, 8, 10, 12/Women's XS, S, M, L/Men's S, Women's 1XL/Men's M, Women's 2XL/Men's L). Molly's Sketchbook: Toddler T-Shirt

Making clothes for little children is a satisfying endeavor. Kids look great in boxy shapes, so you can get away with omitting tricky details like darts. Additionally, and perhaps best of all, kids clothes are small by nature, so they don’t take any time to sew!

This sweet little Toddler T-Shirt, which will fit a 3 year old loosely and a 5 year old more snuggly, is elemental in its construction, just a simple T shape with a charming (and practical) overlap detail at the neck. It’s made with gingham bias tape and Robert Kaufman’s extraordinary Dot Indigo from the Chambray Union collection. This woven fabric has a light, breezy feel and drape, as delightful to wear as it is to sew. All of the materials to make one can be found here in our handy kit!

Sewing this shirt was everything that I love about kids sewing. The only problem is that I ended up being so happy with it, now I want to sew one for myself! For now, however, I might just have to make one for all the kids I know! --Molly

Whit's Knits: Toddler Socks

Like most four year olds, my son can display stunning defiance, like last week when I asked him to take my first Toddler Sock for a test drive. After some coaxing, begging and finally bribery, I succeeded in getting the sock on his foot. Determining that it indeed fit, I reached down to remove the sock and was met with even more resistence, "Uh-uh, I'm never taking it off!" At last I had to admit defeat, because let's face it, hand knit socks are a total delight!

These simple socks are so cute and cozy, even a toddler can appreciate them. Plus, little socks for little people are really fun to make. All the fascination of sock knitting is in fast forward with one interesting step right after another, kind of like a great short story!

I knit up these Toddler Socks in Koigu Premium Merino, one of our all-time favorite merinos. Soft, machine washable, stretchy, and gorgeously hand-dyed, KPM is the ultimate yarn for adorable socks and happy little feet. And all four skeins I used to make all four pairs of socks are available in one Purl Soho yarn kit. Pick up either our pink and aqua or orange and aqua colorway right here!

To take a peak of my son, Bear, wearing his favorite color pink socks, check out Purl Soho's March 2013 Instagram feed right here. And to get started making your own Toddler Socks, read on! -Whitney

Whit's Knits: Cozy Ear Flap Hat

No one's fond of cold ears and we're all pretty averse to icy wind blowing down their canals. So, here is a hat designed to protect these most vital appendages.

And you know that swathe at the back of your head that gets ignored by both hat and scarf? This hat covers that too! These are important practical issues but certainly not excuses to be uncute. In fact, these concerns for warmth and comfort may have inspired our sassiest hat yet!

For toastiness and style I turned to Purl Soho's Super Soft Merino. This is one yarn you'll welcome right up against your ears. Itch-free and wonderfully sumptuous, it also happens to make the best pom poms ever. So don't leave the top of your Cozy Ear Flap Hat out in the cold!

Make your ears happy!
