Whit's Knits: Sporty Striped Peds

Ped socks are just the thing for the short attention span of summertime lolly gagging! Peds take the wonders of sock knitting and concentrate them down into one quick little project. Right away you're into the heel flap, and before you know it, the heel and gusset follow.

These are based on my Pom Pom Peds, which, over the past four (gasp!) years, have become a go-to Purl Bee pattern. But instead of bouncy little pom poms at the ankle, these Sporty Striped Peds get their visual zing from six delicate ringlets of pretty color.

I used one of my all time favorite yarns, Koigu Premium Merino. It knits up into a wonderfully soft and machine washable pair of socks. And no need to buy entire skeins of the stripe colors, thanks to Koigu's KPM Needlepoint Yarn, mini nuggets of just eleven yards each!

Whit's Knits: Classic Crocheted Vest for Little Kids

From Mongolia to Peru, vests are a wardrobe staple that seem to go under appreciated here in 21st century America. But to my thinking, so many people so far and so wide could not be wrong about such a thing. Vests are classic!

This one uses a lovely, nubbly stitch pattern and pairs it up with the wonderfully soft and beautiful Anzula Squishy. Sized for ages 2 to 5, little kids will love the loose, easy fit and the freedom of no sleeves. And do with this vest what people everywhere do with theirs, make it a nearly year-round layering essential!

Whit's Knits: Just Triangles Entrelac Scarf

It seems that many of us have two reasons to knit and that these reasons are the opposite of each other! We, on the one hand, choose projects for their monotony, knowing that mindlessness and repetitive motion put us in a meditative state that even a yogi might admire.

And, on the other hand, we love a challenge, knowing that when a pattern activates our minds and surprises our expectations the result is an elated sense of achievement. Here's a pattern for when you're in that kind of a mood!

The Just Triangles Entrelac Scarf takes traditional entrelac knitting, which involves lots of small triangles and squares, and gives it a modern look with a blown-up scale and a pared-down style. Omitting all those squares, you'll knit just the first and last rows of entrelac, ending up with eleven big triangles in all. Pretty fascinating and definitely fun!

And if you're unfamiliar with the mysteries of entrelac, you'll perhaps come to the pleasant realization that those two opposite reasons we knit sometimes become one. As your mind whirrs with wonder, you may have to suspend your disbelief and relax your skepticism. You may, in fact, just have to take a leap of faith into the unknown!

The secret behind this scarf's spectacular glow is a new yarn from the wizards at Alchemy. Tweedy is a very lightweight blend of cotton, silk and mohair, loosely spun into a beautiful cocoon of hand dyed color! Each skein has in common a creamy white strand of cotton so that colors blend subtly together, shifting from shade to shade as if lit by the sun!

Whit's Knits: Crocheted Jewelry Dishes

I love the vitrines at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that are filled with household artifacts from places long ago and far away. Tightly woven mats and perfectly crafted sandals, hammered metal and braided leather, ancient objects still feel alive with the integrity and vitality of their makers.

What sometimes also strikes me is how little our aesthetic values have changed over the thousands of years. Beauty is still a human imperative and careful craftsmanship is still a revered skill. We still respond to simple shapes and beautiful materials, to whimsical embellishments and practical uses.

I thought about this a lot as I crocheted these Jewelry Dishes. I wondered if I were given the opportunity to slip them into a glass case at the Met, would they be so out of place? Or, if I put them on my dresser and filled them with my rings and bracelets, my pieces of sea glass and other curios, would it be that much different than, say, a Pacific Islander from centuries back storing glass trade beads and shell earrings in her own hand crafted vessel? And isn't this connection to the past really, deep down, why we craft?

My trip into antiquity was greatly assisted by the purity and simplicity of Habu's extraordinary fibers. I held two yarns together, Copper Bamboo and Dyed Linen. The bamboo and linen lend an exquisite rusticity to the finished pieces, while throughout, the copper flashes its chestnut sparkle, glowing like a warm ember.

It's not hard to make your own pretty little trays and bowls, just some simple crocheting... like it's always been done! --Whitney

PS Wouldn't these gorgeous brass bracelets be right at home in a museum case? The Maggie Bracelets were designed by our good friend Kerrilynn Pamer and are for sale online right here and at her lovely West Village store, Castor & Pollux!

Whit's Knits: Whisper Wrap

Summer's parties demand some tricky layering strategies. As the moon rises and the air turns nippy, it's no fun having to cover up your pretty dress with a cardigan or jacket, and yet goose bumps aren't exactly the perfect party accessory either. And so at times like these, a graceful wisp of a shawl comes in awfully handy!

The Whisper Wrap falls like a breath of golden light, a bit diaphanous and a whole lot elegant. A simple chevron lace pattern gives it a spare structure that's at home with any outfit, from your little black dress to your wedding dress!

For a beautiful shine and a unique story, I knit the Whisper Wrap with Anzula's Mermaid. It combines traditional silk with a newfangled seaweed-based fiber called Seacell, straight from the ocean's floor. Durable, insulating, super soft and absolutely gorgeous, it's quite an invention!

For all of this season's weddings and outdoor get togethers, your very own Whisper Wrap is the perfect companion!
