Laura's Loop: Nautical Needlepoint Coasters

Once again summer is here, and my family is planning its annual trip to Maine. We'll all cram into the old riverside home that was once my great grandfather's, a naval man who never did hide his love for the sea. The walls are still covered with regalia from his days on the water, and this maritime-themed hostess gift will definitely fit right in!
These Nautical Needlepoint Coasters go hand in hand with last year's Nautical Flag Napkins. Both take advantage of the amazing graphics and colors of the traditional nautical alphabet. To get the pop of really saturated reds, yellows, and blues I turned to the beautiful hand dyed colors of Koigu's Premium Merino. And for a table-friendly backing, I used Wollfilz Wool Felt, so soft and gentle!
This project is so portable it fits right into the small pocket of a tote bag, so I know I'll be whipping out my needle and yarn a couple more times this summer as I head off to visit friends and family, arriving with the perfect gift in hand! Make just a simple set of two coasters for the bedside or for fun, choose flags that spell something personal. These eight coasters together are the letters of my family's name, F-E-R-G-U-S-O-N!
I look forward to spelling my way through the rest of the letter flags, celebrating summer, the sea and the generosity of this season's hosts and hostesses! You'll find free templates for all 26 letters of the alphabet in my Nautical Needlepoint Coasters Project Journal, along with step-by-step instructions right here! Happy summer seas! -Laura

Super Simple Felt Easter Basket

It is a tradition in our family that every Easter I make my daughter, Coco, a special holiday gift.  From the stuffed bunny of her infancy to the still beloved Bag of Beans from a few years ago, the challenge for me lies not only in coming up with something different year after year, but also in making her something fun and cheerful without stepping over the line into saccharin.

While I admittedly have a reputation for getting more excited than the average person about things made entirely in shades of ecru, I do get equally excited about bright pops of color accenting these neutral fields.  And so it's no surprise, to me at least, that I decided to make this super simple Easter Basket out of creamy white 100% Wool Felt with a burst of lively stitching around its rim.

I was amazed at how beautifully the thick 5mm Felt stitched together.  So soft and pliable, I felt like I was shaping a clay vessel.   And even the finished basket looks like a ceramic sculpture... until you touch it and feel just how soft it is!

The grass inside is also wool felt and makes the perfect bed for painted eggs.  For these photos, I couldn't resist filling the baskets with subtle Araucana eggs, but I can also happily picture the wee hours of Easter morning when Coco first spots her Felt Easter Basket spilling over with the colorful treats of the day!

Molly's Sketchbook: Bunny Hand Puppets

As I was making these sweet bunny hand puppets I realized that my attachment to them had grown beyond my usual care and attention and had blossomed into full blown love! They just seem to have such personalities! I found myself getting a little carried away, actually naming each one and fabricating little story lines about them. (Maybe I need to get out more!)

But enough about my eccentricities, let me introduce to you (clockwise from top left): Daffodil, Daisy, Marigold, Peppermint, Pansy, Petunia, Carrot, and Sunny, my Bunny Hand Puppets! Won’t they look great in your Easter basket?

These puppets are sewn from durable, soft 100% wool felt in ecru, accented by a vibrant Dahlia Bundle. They are so simple to sew that they're the perfect project to make with a child who is just learning. Their bright colors and happy smiles make them extra fun to construct and to play with once they’re finished!

Ps- These puppets were partially inspired by my earlier Bunny Finger Puppets, which you can find here!

Molly's Sketchbook: Felt Candy Hearts

One of my very first sewing projects was a heart-shaped Valentine's Day pillow. Under the fearless tutelage of my kindergarten teachers Pat and Dot, I first sewed together two pieces of bright red flannel. Then, with my shakey five-year-old handwriting, I embroidered "I  Love You" in thick white wool. We all took our time using blunt needles to spell out those three little words, and I remember feeling so proud when I presented it to my mom.

This year I'm revisiting that homey, straight-from-the-heart kind of Valentine gift with these hand stitched little Felt Candy Hearts. They're great for storing candy, notes and trinkets and are truly as easy as pie to sew. I love to think of the happy pride kids will have when they bring to school their very own sewn-with-care Felt Candy Hearts. I remember that feeling well!

So grab a bundle of our ultra easy-to-use 100% Wool Felt (I used the pretty Fuchsia colorway) and some cheerful DMC pearl cotton, and get started, teacher! -- Molly
