Whit's Knits: Heirloom Christmas Stocking

When it came to appraising Christmas stockings when I was a kid, I was sure grateful that my grandma was a knitter. A knit stocking meant lots of stretch, and lots of stretch meant... well, lots of stuff. Santa still fills my stocking, and nowadays, I'm not as appreciative of getting piles of loot as I am of having a treasured hand knit from my dear ol' gram.

I count the Christmas stocking as one of knitting's most gratifying projects. It is one of the only things you can knit that is practically guaranteed to be cherished year after year, indelibly marking the memory of its owner every Christmas season. What a payoff!

For my Heirloom Christmas Stocking I wanted to reflect the quiet beauty of winter with a stitch pattern that evokes windswept fields of snow, rows of icicles hanging from the eaves, and scalloped patterns of frost on the window. I also wanted this stocking to look like it could have been plucked from a mantle sixty or eighty or a hundred years ago. And that it could grace a mantle a hundred years from now.

Knitting an heirloom definitely inspires me to choose my yarn with care. I want the yarn to be beautiful and pure, to be so special that fingers a generation from now will appreciate its quality. And so I chose Purl Soho's Worsted Twist, our 100% merino wool that is as soft as Santa's beard and as special as Christmas itself!

May your version of our Heirloom Christmas Stocking be just that: everlasting, classic, and most importantly, loved! -Whitney

I love to knit objects that are direct and unfussy and that I can accomplish no matter how many times I am distracted by my busy schedule. Designed to be worked up in our new Worsted Twist, a classic, plied yarn in 100% incredibly soft merino, this pattern is my new project of choice.

New Kit: Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners

Many of us probably remember using grandma's scratchy scraps and old bent aluminum needles to knit our very first scarf, hat or blanket. We were proud enough of our accomplishment to try again, but the project itself is probably forgotten in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. It is our mission at Purl Soho to prevent the sad fate of moth-eaten first projects!

Novice or expert, we all appreciate the pleasure of wonderfully soft merino and warm wooden knitting needles; we all feel inspired by sophisticated, modern design; and we all want to wear or give the fruits of our labor with pride and joy. That's why Purl Soho has created a kit for first-time knitters that satisfies basic standards of beauty. Our new Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners kit equips the fledgling knitter with the supplies and knowledge (from winding to a ball to weaving in ends) to knit up a beautiful set of winter goodies!

Constructed out of simple garter stitch rectangles, these hat and hand warmers are classic, chic and totally easy-as-pie. And in Purl Soho's gorgeous Worsted Twist, they're incredibly soft and cozy too! Sized for women and men, each kit includes enough yarn to knit up a hat and a pair of hand warmers.

Each Hat and Hand Warmers for Beginners kit includes...

  • 2 skeins of Purl Soho's Worsted Twist, which is enough to make a hat and set of hand warmers
  • A pair of birch wood US size 7 knitting needles (and a yarn needle for finishing)
  • A full-color how-to-knit instruction booklet, plus step-by-step patterns for an adult sized hat and pair of hand warmers

Choose from seven of our favorite colors (shown above, from the top): Toasted Charcoal, Dark Loam, Timeless Navy, Peacock Blue, Super Pink, Ballet Pink and Heirloom White. And get knitting!

Laura's Loop: Brioche Vest

Rooted in my days of wearing school uniforms, my longtime adoration of vests is based in their practicality. Well, at least that was the case before this one… for a vest in brioche stitch is no longer just for logistical layering.

Brioche stitch has as decadent a feel as its namesake has flavor. Deep ridges and valleys give it a rich textural appeal, while wide, airy ribbing provides an unexpected loftiness. Plus, it begs for shaping details; even minimal decreases (like I did here) add a beautiful curve up and around an otherwise linear fabric.

Knit in Purl Soho’s sumptuous Worsted Twist, these soft ribs will hug your core toasty warm all fall, winter and into spring. There will be few times you won’t find an excuse to wear your Brioche Vest!

Even with its multi-seasonal layer-ability, I think the luxurious feel of cuddling into this generously turtlenecked vest trumps issues of practicality?!? Maybe I’m wrong? Maybe I should keep testing it out to be sure… -Laura
