The Un-Paper Bag: Pin + Sew Fabrics

UN-pin1

Pin Fabrics

  • Layer the interfacing on the wrong side of the Soleil fabric, lining up all sides. From now on treat the interfacing and the Soleil as if they are one piece of fabric.
  • Pin the two pieces of Soleil together (right sides together) along both sides and the bottom. Don't pin the top together. Make sure the markings match up and your fabric is oriented correctly.
  • Pin the Shot Cotton squares together in the same way.

Sew Fabrics

  • Sew around all three sides using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Make sure not to sew up the top!

Mark Fabrics Again

  • Once you've sewn around the three sides of both the Lining (the Shot Cotton) and the Outer Bag (the Soleil), mark lines all around as you did earlier but this time it will be on the wrong side of the fabrics: 3-inches from the sides and bottom and 1-inch from the top. These markings will be your guide for constructing the bottom of the bag.

Below is a picture of the Outer Bag and interfacing after being sewn and marked (I used a pencil to mark on the interfacing) :

I made one of these last night using this tutorial as a guideline and I think you meant 1/2 inch seam allowance. I was doing the math and a 3 inch chalk mark, minus the 1/4 inch seam allowances would leave you with 5.5 inches, not 5 inches.

Hi Jennifer-
You are right. I have changed it on the pattern. I'm just so used to writing quilting project patterns (which always use a 1/4 inch). Thanks so much for the correction!- Molly
